Skaggs Creek camp out and paddle

This will be an overnight camp out at a former Girl Scout Camp in Barren County. This activity will be Hosted for by Chris Grinstead. The camp has various cabins with bunk beds and a kitchen area. Please plan on packing for cold weather camping and paddling. Saturday the group will complete a shuttled paddle on Skaggs Creek which is a tributary or feeder creek that flows into Barren River Lake. Pack enough clothes and food for a complete weekend of outdoor activity. Bunk beds are limited so please contact Chris if you need one. Otherwise plan on tent camping on the property.

The property also has a stocked lake so don't forget your fishing gear.

Please use the discussion section to coordinate food and bunk beds.
Additional information from Chris:

There 11 cabins, the upper cabin as pictured with 4 bunks and a loft; a lower cabin with at least 4 bunks, and 9 small camping cabins. The large cabin sleeps around 8 people and has a wood stove and a full-size fridge and electric stove; small cabins sleep 4 each; 1 has a fireplace. Plenty of room under roof. This, however, is not the Ritz, so some will have to bring sleeping pads, although there are around 16 there, along with sleeping bags, blankets + pillows.

Check out this web site describing the Scout Camp where we will camp on the Skaggs Creek. http://thkyscoutcamprotary.com/

Tom and I had a great time on the water. I really wish we could have stayed and enjoyed the food and over night.
Thanks Chris for hosting a great day.

Skaggs Creek was great! Weather was absolutely wonderful…fast flow, a few really bouncy wave trains, and interesting twists and turns. Wonderful winter paddle with snowy ice dotting the rocky bluffs and shaded landscape with a hint of spring in the air with the chirping birds and spring peeps. Fun paddle day with excitement on the water (IWE x2) and off with the human ladder trap (thanks everyone for the rescue, esp. Sally the nurse. Then a few of us enjoyed the beautiful sunset, Sally's awesome steak fajitas…wonderful food, fellowship, and colorful funky flames! Thank you, Chris, for getting that last spot on the calendar and hosting this great weekend. Sorry more of us couldn’t stay for the overnights.

Hey the address above looks wonky- any more help with directions. Tom and I are coming early Saturday.

    March 7, 2014

    • Maryellen S.

Tammy, the map is correct; when you turn onto the Woods Store-Etoile road, it will be the first left and it is a narrow (one-lane) road with a gate.

      March 7, 2014

    • Maryellen S.

Sorry, it would be the second left (first left is a residential driveway).

I really wish I was...I hope Chris opened the gate... :) Enjoy. See ya tomorrow!

I'm now a "paddle only". And that's if I can get (the future) "Knot Long" in/on the baby rental car I have. (truck in shop). Probably will stay for Saturday dinner. Food requests?

    March 7, 2014

    • Sally Watson F.

I'll be there in the morning to paddle! Will bring 3 skirt steaks to throw on the fire (hope someone has a grate) and will saute some peppers and onions to go with on tortillas. Two loooooong days at work and didn't have enough time to get everything ready for tonight.

      March 7, 2014

I'm in paddle only club too!!!

I won't be camping but tentatively plan to paddle. I looked at the creek this morning and there will be plenty of water. It looks good!

Looks like I'm going to be paddle only...Myong's been sick all week and wants me to be here with her at night.

    March 7, 2014

    • Maryellen S.

Tell Myong I'm sorry she's been sick! Hope she's all better soon!

NOTE: For those camping...remember, this Sunday is SPRING FORWARD!!!!

    March 7, 2014

  • Travis M.

My plans have changed and I have to get up early Saturday morning and attend my child's district pinewood derby, so I won't be paddling, however I plan to stop by and hang out for a little while tonight. However, I won't be camping because I have a cabin just a few miles down the road and I'm going to just stay there tonight.

How rain -dependent is this paddle? I'd like to avoid bottom-dragging my kayak if possible. Also, what is the estimate length & time?

    February 20, 2014

    • Travis M.

There has been enough rain that you shouldn't drag. In the summer, you will unless it has just rained.

      1 · March 7, 2014

  • Erika P.

Well it's official. I have gotten sick of all this snow/ice so I'm not going to be able to make it. I was really looking forward to it. It was a lot of fun last year. Hope everyone has a wonderful time.

What time do the non campers need to be there and where do we need to meet?

    3 · March 5, 2014

    • matt w.

You meet at the address listed above under the main heading labeled "the cabin"

      March 6, 2014

  • matt w.

Part two : as for the paddle or folks just showing up to paddle only. I would recommend that you arrive at the campground around 9:30 am. This will allow plenty of time for everyone to get together and hash out the shuttle and parking.

    March 6, 2014

  • matt w.

I just talked to Chris on the phone and he requested that I convey the following : Be prepared for some mud. There are plenty of places for folks to sleep indoors(several smaller cabins), so don't worry about having a place to sleep. Electricity is on, however water is still off. Please be flexible in regards to the put in and take out for the paddle. High water and muddy. Parking will be limited but I am sure we can work it out.(this is strictly regarding the paddle portion of the outing). Please pack accordingly to allow for the weather !

    March 6, 2014

  • Deborah P.

Would love to join you all but rough week for me and under the weather now.... Enjoy

    March 6, 2014

  • Maryellen S.

I'm going to be a paddle-only-paddler. I've had grandbaby 3x this week and slammed at work.

    March 6, 2014

    • Maryellen S.

P.S. Now everyone can rest easy/sleep in the cabin :) LOL

What time will we start the shuttle Saturday?

    2 · March 5, 2014

  • Bill J.

I'm still struggling with the Jeep transmission change-out; I'm going to have to cancel. Hope to meet everyone at the Harpeth on April 12th.

  • Sally Watson F.

My back would really like to have a bunk! Hey, I have a dutch oven, too. This sounds like fun.

    1 · February 2, 2014

    • Maryellen S.

Bunks do have mattresses. I don't remember a grill but there is a pavilion with an outdoor fireplace you can cook on if you want to bring appropriate grill grate. There is a refrigerator and an electric stove with only a few working elements unless it has been upgraded in the last 2 years. I was not there last year...Chris will have to get the water turned on for outdoor faucet and retrieval.

      1 · February 18, 2014

    • Maryellen S.

Please note my comment was before Chris advised that there will be NO running water at the facility...bring whatever water you will need for ALL your needs. :)

      March 4, 2014

  • matt w.

Chris sent me an email today. He wants everyone to know that the water will not be on at the campground. Everyone will need to bring any that they may need .

Will Saturday's paddle will be complete by 4PM? I have to pick up my wife at Nashville airport around 7PM.

    February 27, 2014

    • Maryellen S.

Bill, there are no definites in kayaking...having said that, it's a short paddle and depending on what time we get started, stops, hauling boats over logs (as they had to do last year), IWE's, etc., we "should" be done by then. :) Ya just never know.

      February 28, 2014

    • matt w.

I think you will be fine Bill

      February 28, 2014

  • Bill J.

    Maryellen.

Thanks for the info. I looked over last year's pictures of pulling boats over the log jam. Looks like fun.

This weekend I'm in the garage swapping my Jeep transmission. I hope to be finished in time to join the group at the camp site.

I will not be staying overnight, but I am looking forward to the paddle. The scout camp is a beautiful place, cabins, lake, creek flowing by, I believe there are 200 acres total. I live just a few miles away.

I will also only be there for the paddle, heading to Frankfort Saturday night.

Hi Chris If there is bunk avail. I will use it if not I can tent it...thanks

    February 22, 2014

  • Tammy Willinger F.

Question, it says 2pm meet up on Friday. I'll probably have to work till 3, What time are people expected to show up and - what time in the morning Saturday - if my hubby wants to join us for the paddle?

    February 18, 2014

    • Tammy Willinger F.

I thought I asked for a bunk earlier- but don't see the post. Just checking - do we know how many bunks there are?

      February 18, 2014

    • Maryellen S.

I have added some information in the above description for the paddle.

Hoping for warmer weather but, y'all know how I roll!

    February 2, 2014

Should be warmer than our last camp-out at the Tailwater :)

I miss you guys! Can't wait to hang out with all of you again :)

    1 · February 2, 2014

If it is okay, can I bring an air mattress and stay in loft of the big heated cabin? That way others can have bunk beds. I will bring something to eat as well.

    2 · February 2, 2014

    • Maryellen S.

I'll bring a mattress, too since there are not that many beds.

      February 17, 2014

  • Powell A.

looks like uncle, bubba, matt, and me will enjoy the quiet being outside and not in the cabin

    1 · February 17, 2014

    • Maryellen S.

Everyone in cabin needs to bring ear plugs! Just sayin'

      3 · February 17, 2014

  • Joe H.

Is there a non camping option? Can I meet you all at the cabin the day of the paddle?

    February 15, 2014

    • matt w.

No problem Joe, just show up early.

      1 · February 15, 2014

  • Bill J.

If there is room in a cabin, that would be great. If it's cramped, I simply camp in my Jeep.

    February 15, 2014

  • Maryellen S.

Chris, would like a bunk, please.

    February 3, 2014

  • Dick W.

I would like a bunk bed. Will be watching to see if there's any suggestions on what food I should.

    February 2, 2014

  • dan b.

I'd like a bunk if one is available. I'll plan on doing some Dutch oven cooking.
