Mammoth Cave National Park: Green River- Dennison Ferry to Green River Ferry

Its too pretty outside not to paddle!!! Whether you will or will not be joining us for the overnight paddle and camping trip on the Green River later this month, the weather this weekend looks way too spring-like to pass up the opportunity to paddle.

This will be a 7.5 mile paddle through Mammoth Cave National Park, from Dennison's Ferry to the Green River Ferry.

PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING PADDLE RULES:

* We are paddling through Mammoth Cave National Park. MCNP regulations require that you have a PFD in your boat, and they do enforce this requirement stringently. The water will be running pretty swiftly, so wearing that PFD versus just having it in your boat is also advisable.

* You are REQUIRED to have a dry bag containing an entire new, dry set of clothing in case you take an involuntary swim. This is a safety measure. The air temperature will be pretty pleasant, but that water is still very cold. We will require that you demonstrate that you have this before we depart from the meeting spot to our put-in. If you do not have your dry bag with extra clothing with you at our meeting location, you should plan to turn around and head to the house.

* Please note you must descend 20-40 very TALL steps that are often covered with very slick mud to reach the river. If you have physical limitations that make descending these tricky stairs a hazard to your health please do not sign up for this paddle. Our group is always generous to help each other carry boats and such. But you do need to be willing, and physically able, to help in that effort. And we don't want you to end up with a broken arm, leg or hip because you did not acknowledge your own physical limitations.

I don't read in the summer...I paddle! :) Bubba Duane's the one that has over 200 books in his library! So nice to meet you Teresa and I'm glad a spot opened up for you on the Spring Fling! :)

Tom and I read - Jim Butcher, Terry Pratchett, Patrick Rothfuss (awesome), Kim Harrison, Devon Monk, Charlaine Harris, Kevin Hearne And the one I could not remember Diana Galbaldon. She has the Historical fiction that takes place in Scotland. First one is called Outlander. I also like Young Adult literature - like Rick Riordan. There is your Summer!!!! LOL

Great trip and enjoyed meeting everyone in the group. Great bunch of paddlers. Trip was just right length of time (wish I had taken my long boat and maybe I wouldn't have had some many stokes.

y'all have fun. I'm hoping the water's not too high and I can spend part of tomorrow waist deep in the Flint River catching shoalies and redeyes.

I just spoke to a park representative because the MCNP website is still indicating water levels are not at a safe level. But apparently they just have not been updated. She stated the river is at 6.4. It is considered safe at anything under 10. So as of now, it is at a safe level to paddle on Saturday.

What is rhe best boat for this trip 10ft tor 15ft?

    April 17, 2014

    • Jason S.

I think the water will be moving pretty fast. I would use the 10ft.

With Spring blooming (redbuds, cherry trees, dogwoods, forsythia, spring wildflowers), this will be a beautiful paddle on the Green River. Thank you for hosting, Jason and Maria! I was going to the lake by myself but this is a much better offer! :)

I agree. Now I just have to make sure I'm not ON CALL. Can you believe an $8 an hour job wants people on call. NOT me. Either you schedule me or you don't.

This sounds great. My wife Lori (purple boat) will be joining us on this trip.
