Upgrading Paleo Flavors w/Rachel Ball + Paleo Potluck

Heya SF Paleo,

After a short April break, we’re back in business, with a mini-lecture from a crazy talented paleo blogger Rachel Ball. She will give us a much needed primer on upgrading food with herbs, spices, and basic cooking wisdom. Think salt and peppppa taken to a whole new level.  All this, while munching on some yummy potluck grub, and meeting like minded SF Paleo cave-psters. Cheers, and I hope to see ya'all!

    I looked at this ladies blog all the food looks delicious. The secret ingredient is sugar. Almost all of her recipes contain sugar. What is the point of spending all the extra time needed to adapt to the paleo life style and all the money in buying better ingredients if you are not going to maintain a ketogenic state. You will miss out on most of the benefits of a paleo diet. I am new to this and this is readily apparent to me. Why would you promote someone recipes when they are clearly not paleo, because they take you out of a ketogenic state. I will not be attending this event.

      Hey J, carbs/sugar isn't evil for those with a potent well-oiled, insulin/amylin/grehlin/l­eptin function. I'm a huge proponent of ketosis but some folks are just happier/healthier with healthy carbs (thinking historically, e.g. Kitavans, Okinawas etc.). Now whether it's sweet potatoes or dates in Rachel's cake, as a self-hacking type 1 diabetic, molecule-length aside, it's all just sugar. But again, if you can handle it, I think you would be mad to skip it all. And finally, I do think that ephemeral pleasure, such as what you get from the pride of being human, of experiencing the art and craft that our mind is capable of, is biochemically a great optimizer/food in itself.
