White Tank Mountains Hike and Nature Center

Jan 13 (Sun) 10 AM “C” hike (6 miles RT 1,000' EC)
We'll hike 3 miles out and back on the Mesquite Canyon Trail in the White Tanks Regional Park. The trail has a nice mix of steady uphills and level but elevated parts, with nice views of the mountains and parts of the west valley. The small nature center has live snakes, scorpions, spiders, etc.
Contact Pete Weinelt at [masked] or[masked] or Bev Full at [masked] or[masked]
We can meet for car-pooling into the park, if people want to.

I'd like to car pool in to the park.. Meeting at the nature center is the most convenient but maybe also the most in-convenient.
I was told by the folks at the nature center it's OK to park there and car-pool in. So I scheduled a hike with that as a meeting place, only to encounter signs on the day of hike in the lot saying if you car pool in and leave your car there you will be charged the $6 [entrance] fee. But no-one was charged who left there car there that day. I was later told that they put the signs out on days the Library there is closed.
So my suggestion for a car pool meeting place is on Olive road, before the no-parking signs begin. I've seen cars there a number of times, and been told by other hikers it's OK to leave the cars there. This is one of my favorite hikes, with my least favorite parking situation [for car pooling].

Let's meet closest to Olive Avenue. I have a blue Prius. (Sorry, haven't been at this Fry's in a while. Don't remember the setup of shopping center.)

OK, so we now have two car pooling locations for people who want to car pool to choose from.
Fry's on Olive next to the 101 at 9:30 AM.
And the Shadow Ridge High School parking lot at 9:45 AM - [meet at the school parking area along Perryville Road - just north of Peoria ave].
And like Malinda suggested, we'll all meet at the trail-head at 10 AM.
Again, please communicate here if you want to carpool.
I'll send a final communication on Friday/Saturday just to make sure we're in snych.

I'd like to meet at Fry's on Olive nest to 101 . What time?

    January 7, 2013

    • Malinda

Hi Margaret, see post above about meeting at Fry's.

      January 7, 2013

  • Malinda

Ok, Margaret, and anyone else who wants to carpool into the park by meeting at the Fry's at 9043 West Olive Avenue
Peoria (just east of the 101): I can squeeze 4 into my Prius - or if other cars want to meet too - I think meeting at 9:30 gives us plenty of time. (We'll split the entrance fee - I think it's $6.) It's probably best then to just meet at the trailhead at 10. We can check out the nature center after the hike.

Thanks Malinda. If anyone is interested in meeting Malinda at the Fry's for car pooling, let her and others know by responding here. I come from the Wickenburg area, and come down the 303 to Olive, So l suggest we meet on Olive before the park entrance, right before all the no-parking signs, say at 9:45 AM. For those who just want to meet at the trail-head in the park, we''ll all meet there at 10 AM. [parking area #7 on Ramada Way].

There is a Fry's in Peoria on Olive just off the 101 where we could park to carpool in to the park:

    10 AM start time!!

Why is this hike being scheduled for night? I don't think the nature center is open after 5:00pm. You would get more people if you did the hike in the daytime. I have found that only the most experienced people are comfortable hiking at night. Are there plans for dinner there or someplace else since it is a ways out there?
