Vegan Book Club Discussion and Tea Party at Café Pinson

I love reading. Reading is the source of our knowledge and ignorance. As you may know true knowledge is absolute, but human knowledge is relative and ignorance is not bliss. As humans we need to read in order to learn, to raise consciousness and understand our world. Are you a book and reading lover ? Litterature and knowledge inspire us and helps us to understand, to create, to relax, to escape, to explore. Vegetarian and vegan culture is full of wonderful interesting amazing books. You like to read and want to educate yourself about vegetarianism and veganism ?

I suggest to organize a recurrent meetup to discover and discuss about one or several books relating to veganism. No Cookbooks in this meetup but litterature relating to veganism.

Veganism is about more than food and diet : it's a lifestyle !
Discussion Topics of those books could be about : wellness, health, nutrition, fiction or science-fiction, novels with friendly veggie and vegan themes, animal rights and advocacy, social justice, art, history, philosophy, psychology, sociology, spirituality, meditation, politics, organic agriculture, environment, sustainable green living projects and green issues.

Every month with your help I will suggest a list of books to read and you will choose at least two books to read. I am always opened to the suggestions. Then I will organize a meetup in a nice Café/Lounge Tea/Restaurant or a potluck Tea Party and we will discuss about those books. Besides the fact that it will be a great opportunity to meet fellow veggies and vegans, It also will be a peaceful and fun moment to share your thoughts and ideas, critical views about the author and the book. Anyone interested can attend to this meetup. The only condition to attend to this meetup will be the necessity to play the only rule. READ THE BOOKS of course ! :)

The book to read and to review can be in french or in english.

We did a first meetup on Sunday February 24th at Cafe Ginger in order to know what books we could read.

There's so many interesting books but we need to choose at the end. Finally the first books we're going to read for the next vegan book club discussion are :

Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs and Wear Cows by Melanie Joy Ph.D

http://www.amazon.fr/Love-Dogs-Pigs-Wear-Cows/dp/1573245054/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1361745549&sr=8-1

The World Peace Diet : Eating for Spiritual Health and Social Harmony by Will Tuttle Ph.D

http://www.amazon.fr/World-Peace-Diet-Spiritual-Harmony/dp/1590560833/ref=sr_1_1?s=english-books&ie=UTF8&qid=1361745805&sr=1-1

You can read the two books I suggested if you're a quick reader, or a geek and if you like challenges. Otherwise the reading of Only one book will be enough to attend to this meetup.

Are you Ready to Read ! It Starts now !

Challenge yourself and Let's share vegan culture !

I just remembered to look up The Jungle and it is indeed in the public domain. :) You can read it online or download it for Kindle or other devices here: http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/140

Thanks Elisa for posting the link of this interesting book. So everyone can read this book especially if it's in the public domain...

It was really nice seeing everyone and sharing our thoughts about Melanie Joy's book! It was interesting to hear how each of us was touched by it. I really liked the setting at café Pinson, really convivial, it reminded me a little of Le Pain Quotidien and the banquette area was awesome, it's too bad it was so loud though.. Maybe a quieter place would be better next time...?

Nice first book club, it was a pleasure to hear what you have thought of this book, and to share ideas on how to apply the tools Melanie gives us. Next book is already downloaded on my tablet :)

It was a great conversation, and we even got to sit in the coveted banquette area! :) This is the book I mentioned: http://www.amazon.com/Change-Heart-Psychology-Spreading-Social/dp/159056233X/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1363545373&sr=8-10&keywords=change+of+heart

Thanks Elisa for sharing the youtube video. The author seems to be a great person and activist. Yes this interesting and inspirational book could be useful. I will post later the date and the schedule for the next vegan book discussion...

Thanks everyone for coming. It was an awesome first vegan book club discussion meetup. Thanks for sharing your interesting thoughts and ideas about this great book. I drank a hot chocolate with hazelnut and almond milk. I ate a raw bar made with sesame seeds, cardamome and dates. Really delicious. Cafe Pinson is a really cosy and great place for this kind of meetup especially if you're lucky enough to sit down on the comfortable banquette. :)

    • Steve P

I've just finished the book, and... wow, I've learned a lot from it, and I still have a lot to digest for the following weeks!
This book is really tailored for our book club, the chapter Book Group Discussion Guide provides us with interesting subjects for our discussions. I even think that one meetup won't suffice to address all of them!
    See you this Sunday :)

Good evening Everyone, So I went to the Cafe Pinson yesterday afternoon. I met the manager and it seems we can only book a table if we eat the brunch on Sunday because the restaurant is always full between 12h00 and 16h00. The manager of the restaurant suggests me to go at 16:00 p.m. What do you think ? We can meet there at 15h45 p.m., I think we will have enough time to discuss. Otherwise if you know an other nice cosy vegan friendly place to go on Sunday afternoon. I'm always opened to the suggestions...

I definitely vote for this meetup but sadly I cannot attend that day :-( I have a lot of books that I didn't finish and that can make me read then more seriously... But one week is so short!!!

    1 · February 26, 2013

    • Steve P

Thanks Cecile for your comment. Sorry you cannot attend. But you can read the books even if you didn't attend this one. We could discuss those books during a next Vegan Book Club Meetup...

      1 · February 27, 2013

  • Steve P

It's Ok not to read the two Books if you don't have the time. Just one book will be enough for the discussion. Please post a comment to tell us what book you will choose to read. If everyone choose the same book, we will discuss the other one during the next Vegan Book Club Meetup...I suggested two books because it seems we have in our meetup group two kind of readers some are reading geeks and some aren't but love challenges and deadlines...:) So why not ? We'll see...
