I just realized I had not made a meetup for this yet...oops. Well here we go!
Most jams are during the summer when the weather is warm and the pavement is dry. But that's only part of the year. MNPK and Fight or Flight Academy will be hosting our first winter jam this year. The weekend will start off with a parkour and freerunning competition at Fight or Flight on Friday and then we go outside and have a blast.
If you have never trained in the cold before, be sure to dress warm. A good jacket, gloves, and hat are very necessary. Layers are also quite important. If you have any questions about what to wear, let us know. We've lived here a while.
Anyone staying at or wanting to play in the gym needs to have a wavier signed. If you are under 18 it needs to be signed by a parent or legal guardian. You can find the waivers on the website (http://www.fightorflightacademy.com/files/waiver.pdf)
The competition will start at 5:00pm on Friday January 11th. There will be a lot of traffic around that time so plan accordingly. The freerunning competition will be a 1 minute freestyle run though the gym. Judging will be based on execution, creativity, difficulty and flow. The parkour competition will be timed obstacle course throughout the gym run 3 separate times. First is forward through the obstacle course, second is reversed, and third is in any order the competitor chooses. Based on the number of competitors, the longest times will be eliminated.
If you would like to compete, entry is FREE! Just let us know before the jam if you are planning on it. There is a $5 spectator fee if you just want to watch. There will be an open gym afterwards which will be free for competitors but an additional $5 for spectators.
The next day (Saturday the 12th) we'll be heading out at noon to Upper Landing Park in St. Paul for some outdoor winter training! Dress warm! After a couple hours of training there, we'll break for lunch and meet again at the North Hidden Falls Park. We haven't been there yet this year, but typically that park is actually closed during the winter so you'll have to park up in the residential area on top and walk down to the park. This means there will be plenty of snow to play around in because they don't plow or shovel it at all. We may also make a quick trip over to Minnehaha park as well and play around at the frozen waterfall. Afterwards we'll head back to Fight or Flight for open gym as late as we feel like training. We will probably also grill some food out back at the gym.
On Sunday the 13th we'll head out again meeting at what's left of Orchestra Hall (may she rest in piece...) at noon and exploring around downtown Minneapolis to see what we can find.
If anyone has any questions, feel free to send me an e-mail and ask away!
