I'm also the organizer for the Thursday meet-up in Friendship Heights. If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions, please let me know! :-)

Book: Beppe Severgnini's "Ciao America" is terrific, and I loved "Esco a Fare Due Passi" by Fabio Volo. Food: spaghetti bolognese, mozzarella, olive verdi, pane toscano, pappa al pomodoro, gelato. City: Obviously, I'm partial to Firenze!
I took an introductory Italian course in college, but I really learned the language during the two years that I was living in Florence. I'd say I'm fluent by now - the trick, I discovered, is to date someone who doesn't speak English :-)

Ciao!
I had a great time! The people I talked to were really nice, and I liked that a lot of people had a pretty high level of Italian - it was really easy to converse with the people I met in this group. As I also suggested to Nancy for the Montgomery County group, maybe it would be fun to sometimes play games or something as a whole group - then everyone could get to know everyone. instead of just the people we wind up sitting near. I had lots of fun and will definitely be coming back!!
