Learn best practices for (and examples of) a WordPress development workflow

  • Needs a date

  • Needs a location

  • Similar to the Vagrant talk, I'd love to attend a session on setting up, configuring and using a great WordPress dev environment--incorporating Git, etc. Not the end-all, but a good end-to-end example.

I was meandering around and saw this listed in "upcoming events". An old listing for sure! Would it ever be revived?

Patty, only if you or someone else finds a speaker and reserves a meeting room, then turns this into an actual Meetup.

I would be into talking about my workflow using Composer to install WordPress and manage plugs/themes. I could do a real-time deployment of a demo site to Forge...

I'd be happy to talk about ServerPress (an awesome local dev environment based on XAMPP light) the next time this topic is on the table!

Is this suggestion still on the table? I'd be willing to share my workflow and tips for accelerating WordPress theme development and I'm really interested in hearing the same from fellow developers.

Nick - We did do this in December (), but started a new event for it. Sorry for the confusion. This topic is a really hot one, so it definitely will come up again.

Development workflow with version control would be really helpful to me. I've struggled with incorporating github because I don't know what to do with the database. From the learners perspective it would be helpful to discuss the pros and cons of different approaches. It seems that the workflow might be applied differently depending on the complexity of the project, too.

Also, is there any room to address how the designer fits in to the workflow? Or dare I say... the client? We should probably stick to dev workflow, but talking about how a wordpress dev fits into the greater workflow might be another topic to discuss.

Zack and Kenn. I am thinking about offering our new offices as a venue. We have a number of training rooms, kitchen, video studio etc. But I have another interesting twist. Two aspects: 1. our marketing group is poised to begin a new WP site and ditch our old static HTML one. And are interested in current thinking re WP dev environments. 2. We are business management consultants and are conversant in recording data-flow/swimlane diagrams of processes, for the purpose of finding best-practices for our clients. So I will offer the venue, in exchange for shaping the Meetup objective towards attempting to arrive at a best-practice flow, plus recording/documenting the sessions for blog/web content for us all? Here's a gallery of the digs which are in Vancouver, 15 mins from PDX. I live in Portland myself and commute.!i=[masked]&k=vKZTB3r

I'm in to do a short segment on my particular setup, maybe a brief overview and Q&A.

What would you all think about rounding up 2-3 people to talk about this? I have been thinking about a good person for this talk, but because so much of this is subjective, it might be more useful to have a few people share their methods.

Great idea. I'm thinking a development lifecycle of sorts, from version control through deployment.

Hi James! Thank you for the suggestion! I think it is a phenomenal idea. Would you happen to know someone who may be able to do this talk? If you have a suggested speaker, I would be happy to hound her into speaking.

Thanks, Zack. I'm looking, but don't have a candidate in mind right now. I think this would be a great topic for folks somewhere above "beginner" but below "expert" level.

Digging this idea too. Maybe we can slot it in the next few months.
