I just read that Google will start reading extra HTML5 markup and that sites that add this will rank higher. Has anyone used this?

This isn't new. It's been around for a while and Google doesn't give any extra "points" but it is working hard to help make these standards along with micro-formats and such. The more semantic (updated) websites are, the more favored they are by everyone, and Google does penalize for sites not using fairly current semantics, which isn't a reward but a byproduct of them penalizing the oldies. :D
