Lightning Talks!

  • Dec 8, 2010 · 7:00 PM

We're going to try something a little different for the holidays, at a different time and different location, so make a note! Rather than a specific topic with one speaker, we're going to do some lightning talks. In a nutshell, ANYONE can stand up and do a short 5 minute presentation about any topic they wish (preferably relevant to our group, but if you really want to talk about your cats...). Every speaker will be given be 5 minutes (by clock) with a 1 minute warning before the end. Slides are allowed, but not required. Props are welcome! Here's some ideas: * Projects you're working on * A new toolkit you're excited about * A new methodology you've developed * Books/Websites you highly recommend * A public rant/praise about our group * Hassles of writing books (hint, Dave... hint...) * Anything, really if you've never done a lightning talk, here's a good thing to read:
http://selenadelesie.... Please post/email your topic if you plan to present. We may be able to fit in 12-15 in a reasonable time. We're meeting across the river at "Abstract Machines", off Ladd's Rose Gardens Circle and Squares. This won't be hard to get into - and a little more of a party atmosphere than our normal structure. Food and drinks are welcome/encouraged. L'chaim!

I recommend Bazaar for version control:

    http://bazaar.canonical.com/en/

Here's a good tutorial on using it for web developement:

    http://wiki.bazaar.canonical.com/BazaarForWebDevs

And here's a post from my blog that will help you grok some key concepts:

There was some good discussion on version control at this meetup. Does anybody have links to some of the sites/software that was mentioned? I seem to have misplaced my notes.

    Thanks!

It was fun and useful. Thank you, Eric, for organizing it!

Thanks Karen. Once you jump in you'll never look back. :) I should mention something that Brian asked me about later on in the evening – I do still use Photoshop (for me, it helps flush out ideas that my sketches can't) but the client never sees a single PSD, JPG, PNG, PDF, etc. for mockup/presentation purposes.

The link posted by Francis to Meagan Fisher's "make your mockup in markup" is *really* convincing. Thanks to Angie for bringing up this topic last night. It feels so revolutionary! I have a new project in...should I? Should I? :)

@Eric, I tagged some version control links and sent them to pdxweb.

Despite the failed the dead projector, it was a great meeting. Being able to shmooze with folk and get to know who was doing what was a real treat. The Lightning Talks were very informative and I really learned a lot. Thank you Eric!

I really like the open forum that these kinds of meetups can ignite. It's nice to talk from the cuff and not just read from a prepared slide-show.

Thanks everyone for a great night! I wanted to post a link to the short "why" talk - which is much more coherent then my rambling :)

    Ran out of space...

Clearleft, my favourite design agency, does great work with responsive design. Check out http://2010.dconstruct.org and http://www.stpaulsschool.org.uk/ are, IMHO, excellent examples. They also made the http://www.tourdust.com/ site with the breadcrumb-style navigation I mentioned in my talk.

See you next year. Have a good Christmas/holiday/break.

Last night was great. Here's a few links to things I mentioned last night:

Andy Clarke's "contract killer" article in 24 Ways: http://24ways.org/2008/contract-killer

Meagan Fisher's "make your mockup in markup" on the same site is worth reading: http://24ways.org/2009/make-your-mockup-in-markup

Andy has a new book out: http://fivesimplesteps.com/books/hardboiled-web-design which covers HTML5, CSS3, microformats, and presenting designs to clients in the browser rather than in a PSD.

Hey guys, I actually have a Mac here at the office and it has Keynote installed, so yes, you are covered.

Eric, will the laptop you bring be a Mac with Keynote installed?

    December 7, 2010

  • Amanda F.

you are right Eric, that is a better way to go. Also you don't have to have slides to talk about something. Anyone have any more ideas? throw 'em out by posting here, yo.

    December 7, 2010

  • Eric R.

wonderful idea! dibs on chips :)
also, I'm bringing a laptop, so if someone has slides and just wants to bring a USB key or something, that's a better way to go. Since we only have 5 mins per talk - we don't have a lot of setup/teardown time.

since this is a holiday party i'd like everyone to bring cookies/desserts and wine/soda. is this possible for everyone to bring a little something? :)

A talk on responsive design would be perfect, and so would micro-formats! anyone else have an idea? post it here =)

    December 6, 2010

You could bring your own computer, and yes there is a projector! Bring cables to connect to a projector from your own computer. Anything except HDMI is acceptable as the projector is huge with a lot of options. I'd recommend bringing your own computer/laptop if possible.

So what will the situation be for using slides? Should we bring our own computer? Will there be a projector available?
