Should NYC rely on food shipped from thousands of miles away? Or should we prepare for higher transportation costs by growing more of our food in or near the City? Toby Hemenway, author of ?Gaia?s Garden: A Guide to Home-Scale Permaculture,? will describe how permaculture design can be applied to meet much of urban food needs within city limits, while eliminating the use of fertilizer, imported water, and long distance trucking. Learn about ways to make urban gardening easier, and hear how urban gardeners in Los Angeles and Portland are creating ecologically sustainable gathering spaces, using rooftops for gardening and water collection, and turning lawns into gardens.

After obtaining a degree in biology from Tufts University, Toby Hemenway worked as a researcher in genetics and immunology. Toby?s dissatisfaction with the direction taken by biotechnology led to his interest in the ecological design approach to sustainable landscapes, homes, and workplaces known as permaculture. After spending ten years creating a rural permaculture site in southern Oregon, Toby is now developing urban sustainability resources in Portland, Oregon, and teaching at Portland State University. He consults and lectures on ecological design throughout the country. http://www.patternlit...

    •  Great to hear Toby in person. A more interactive session would be an improvement. Also, more focus on how permaculture can be implemented in NYC -- certainly a good focus to a future event.
    •  Toby Hemenway was very interesting and a likeable individual. As always I felt a little disapointed that it wasn't easily applicable to conditions in NYC. While the information was interesting and valuable I wish I could walk away from these events with some concrete things, or small steps that I could implement in my daily life or living space.
    •  An excellent review of Permaculture ethics and principles. I would have liked more practical info on permaculture in urban environments.
    •  It was an interesting event. I found Toby Hemenway to be an good speaker. It was encouraging to hear about the good work people are doing in Portland to build community.
