This Meetup hosts support groups facilitated by people with personal lived experience with various challenges. Receiving support from our peers is an evidence-based strategy to build the life of our choosing. Peers who have lived through similar experiences can provide us with hope in a way that others cannot because they've actually gone through difficulties and seen life get better, as opposed to professionals who have studied that experience in books and classrooms.
These support groups will be facilitated by peers, not professional therapists, and should not replace, but complement other therapies.
Right now, we have a DBT Skills Support Group which meets weekly at the DHS Building on Smithfield St. in Downtown Pittsburgh Wednesdays from 6-8pm. This group uses the 2nd Edition DBT Skills Training Manual to discuss positive life skills, practice mindfulness, and check in about our lives.
I am very interested in hosting additional support groups with different focuses (ex. general support group, anxiety support group, WRAP group, parents support group, etc.) in different areas of Pittsburgh, or on different days/times, but I am too busy to commit to facilitating more groups myself right now. If anyone is interested in facilitating a support group, I'd be happy to support you in many ways.
