I read fiction for the most part, but also enjoy informational books. I was weaned on the classics and still enjoy reading/re-reading those. Contemporary writers include many Southern writers.
Short stories are what I've invested more writing time in, although I have started a novel. Most of my writing revolves around every day events. I've also spent time writing about romance.
I'm a frustrated jazz singer with talents in several areas of the arts. Early creative energies were spent in performance at the local community theater as well as time spent on production. I started college as an art major with a music scholarship and ended up pursuing the musical side of my talent more so than the artist side. Writing came much later in life but has proven to be the current artistic medium where more of my energies are spent.

The meetings that I've been to have offered up lots of great perspectives on where to take a story, how to improve on the plot and characters, and even details for improving aspects of a story such as scene and dialogue. All of the comments seem to me to be constructive towards helping us be better at our craft.
