Hillside Farm, Located in Media, PA is accepting applications for apprentices for the 2014 growing season. We are located on the property of Elwyn, an organization serving the needs of people with developmental disabilities. Hillside Farm is a project of Greener Partners, a nonprofit organization whose mission is connecting communities through food, farming and education. We are located about 20 miles outside of Philadelphia and a train to the city is a 10 minute walk from the farm.
We grow a diverse selection of seasonal vegetables mainly for our 190 member summer and 100 member winter CSA on 8 acres, with addition acreage in cover crops. About ¾ of an acre of this is u-pick crops, as most of our members pick up at the farm as one of the goals of the farm is to reconnect members to where their food comes from. Apprentices will be involved in all aspects of production from greenhouse seeding all the way through harvest and selling at market and all steps in between.
Apprenticeships start March 3 and run through Mid-December. There is the possibility of returning for a second year to continue the apprenticeship with increased responsibilities possible for the right candidate(s). Compensation: Housing with private bedroom, utilities, produce from the farm and stipend. Apprentices will participate in Tri State CRAFT, in which they visit other area farms about every 2-3 weeks during the growing season.
Farming is very physical work and candidates should be expected to be able to lift 50 lb., work in all types of weather conditions, and do so while being able to maintain a positive can do attitude are all requirements of application. All others need not apply. You will sweat, use muscles you never knew you had, sleep well from doing so and wake up excited to do it the next day. The satisfaction of seeing the CSA members pick up their produce with smiles on their faces makes you realize why you put in all the hard work. No experience required, but a strong desire to learn and work hard while doing so is a must. If you meet these requirements email a cover letter, resume and three references to [address removed] , references will not be contacted until after an interview. A farm visit with a working interview is required.
