Growing Bananas in SWFL and Potluck Dinner!

  • Jul 11, 2013 · 6:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Many people grow bananas in Southwest Florida, but few have them flourish. While there are a variety of ways to be successful, there are various tricks and varieties you can purchase that will make your chances of having successful bananas MUCH higher.

On Thursday, July 11th at 6pm, come to the Chapman Food Forest and learn to grow bananas in SWFL! While I personally have been very successful with my bananas and will present my varieties and methodology, let's have this be a dialogue since there are many ways to be successful. If you have been successful with your strategies, we'd love to hear about it as well.

The meeting will be held at my 2.5 acre Food Forest. If you want a tour, please show up at 5:30 sharp.

In addition to the time we spend talking bananas, we can talk anything related to permaculture and Food Forestry. We'll have plenty of time for open discussion and to get to know each other.

We'd like to have a potluck dinner. Nothing fancy. If possible, simply bring something to share. If you can't bring anything, no worries, having you join us is much more important. If possible, bring something local and organic or at least organic.

See you soon!

I'm sorry I missed this meetup! I am new to Southwest Florida, any chance you discussed growing Plantains? Could you suggest any varieties that tend to be successful here in the Fort Myers Beach area?

    • Anne L.

Hi Tracy, I don't know specific plantains that grow here but I do know that ECHO, educational concerns for hunger org. has done a lot of research on varieties that grow in the area and that would be a good place to start. You can go online to their website: www.echo.org I believe will get you in touch with them. Also the extension office, if it is not closed down in lee county in the near future.

Awesome meetup, David. Great group of very knowledgeable permies, loved all the tips everyone shared and learned alot in so little time. I want to start a mini food forest on my property and am thinking how perfect it will be to start with a circle of banana trees and sweet potatoes just below them. Yum!

It was inspiring to be with such a diverse group of people with the common passion for making our homes, communities and ultimately our world a more resilient and abundant place. Your bananas are a testimony to your good practices. I look forward to the next time!

Man, I REALLY REALLY wanted to make this meetup because I'm super interested in growing bananas properly out here in the Estates but I wasn't able to get out of the office early enough to make it by 6 this evening like I was hoping I would (I would have liked a whole garden tour but there was no way I could have made it before 6). Wish it was at like 6:30 or 7 or on a weekend. Disappointed I couldn't make it.

Can you comment back to touch on the important topics, please? My main questions are what to you have to do to make larger banana species flourish & how do you avoid nematode issues?

    Thanks!
