In simple terms, a "person of leisure" or “p.o.l.” is someone who isn’t defined by their 9 to 5, someone who may not even work a 9 to 5 (aka an entrepreneur), someone who lives life to the fullest and works to live (not lives to work). He or she is a person who consistently makes time to have fun, enjoy life and appreciate even the most simplest of life's pleasures! Sound interesting? Want to put the wheels in motion and become a p.o.l. yourself? Well you can - you need only have a desire to have fun, experience new and interesting places, try new things and be willing to make the time for adventures! This is what p.o.l adventures is all about - giving others (and ourselves) the opportunity and inspiration to have some fun and experience a little adventure on a regular basis.
A p.o.l adventure can be road trip to a roadside attraction on Route 66, a visit to one of our beautiful state or national parks, or it can be a visit to a sincere mom & pop restaurant in a neighborhood we never knew existed. A p.o.l is always looking for adventure right in front of his or her eyes - some of the most fun and exciting places can literally be found right in your own neighborhood - just need to go out and look for them : )
Oh and in case you're asking "what do we mean by 'sincere' when referring to a place, point of interest or particular p.o.l adventure". Well, it's actually hard to put into words, but let's just say that we know a "sincere" place when we see it! In a nutshell, what it really means is that the places we go, the things we do and the people we meet all have a charming, historic, mom & pop, comfortable, genuine quality to them that can’t be manufactured or mass-produced and has an authentic quality, often from a by-gone era. Places that are REAL and stand the test of time. You get the idea (hopefully!).
In January 2013, we started "Huellventures" - local activities and road trips inspired by the late, great Huell Howser. While we've been enjoying unofficial "Huellventures" for many years with close friends, we decided to make it a bit more official and extend an invitation to these awesome adventures to everyone in the LA area who has been inspired by people like Huell. With his recent passing, we thought what better way to pay honor to this great man and keep his spirit alive than by helping others experience some of the joy and excitement that he did by getting out there and visiting amaaazing places in our own back yard. In 25+ years of exploring, Huell never ceased to find interesting and historic things to see and do in CA - all with great joy and wonder - and we are inspired by his "sincere" adventures (we consider most of the local businesses that Huell visited to be VERY sincere :)
We hope to see at some of our upcoming p.o.l. adventures and Huellventures!
