ATTN ALL MEMBERS: Roswell is having the first reading on their "new" Chicken Ordinance at this City Council meeting. This issue affects all of us, even if you are currently legal with your chickens, because it is changing the current laws. [b]NOTE: Remember to wear yellow if you have it. It makes a very visable show of how many of us are there to support keeping chickens legal.[/b] Also, a number of our other members are trying to modify their local laws (i.e. Cherokee, Gwinnett) and a large turnout here will hopefully help their causes as well. We do have strength in numbers. This is posted to support backyard poultry throughout the state of GA and will be beneficial to everyone who has,wants, or wants to support our rights to have backyard chickens. It will help people throught the state who may be headed for a chicken battle in their area. Roswell had their day in court and LOST and are still trying to make me and everyone else in Roswell get rid of our chickens that no one has ever complained about . They want to regulate a problem that doesn't exist except in their heads. The city is trying to wear us out by having meeting after meetings but THIS IS THE MAIN EVENT and let's show them we aren't a bunch of chickens. DATE : Monday, November 9th at 7:00 PM LOCATION:ROSWELL CITY HALL 38 hill Street Roswell, GA 30075 Last year Gov Barnes and I made the headlines after Roswell CODE ENFORCEMENT told me that I COULDN'T have chickens IN MY BACK YARD. Even after CITY OF ROSWELL MAYOR JERE WOOD, who is a well respected lawyer told the city "chickens are legal according to the current zoning" but the city choose to prosecute me anyhow. Former Governor and now Gubernatorial Candidate Roy Barnes who has chickens stepped up and took the city to court. Roswell Municipal Court Judge; Maurice Hilliard gave the city attorney a 2 month continuance and a chance to back down gracefully and determine what the sentence "No livestock "except for pigs and poultry" means. Any child with an eighth grade education can figure out what that sentence means so it WASN'T A SURPRISE THAT ON Thursday May 28th Roswell Municipal Court Judge Maurice Hilliard DISMISSED THE CASE and ruled against the city he works for and declared "CHICKENS ARE CURRENTLY LEGAL IN ROSWELL." The city spent $50,000 fighting me over 12 Buff Orpingtons. Now for the last six (6) months they have been drafting a NEW zoning amendment that will restrict and will prohibit me and everyone from having the same chickens the city judge said I could have. By now they have probably spent over $80.000 of taxpayer funds trying to make me get rid of the chickens that my neighbors and I love. Roswell is having the first reading on their new "Anti" Chicken Ordinance at this City Council meeting. Because chickens have been ruled completely legal in Roswell the city has written a new ordinance that is restrictive and will not allow grand fathering in of exist flocks. Having a HUGE TURN OUT LIKE WE DID IN COURT WILL BE IMPORTANT TO CHICKEN CASES NATIONWIDE . I will be there with most of the member of The North Georgia Pet Chicken Meetup Group and we will also be supported by Andy Schneider (The Chicken Whisperer) ,members of his group; The Atlanta Back Yard Poultry Meetup Group which is the largest Backyard Poultry group in the WORLD and has 800 and members of Oakhurst Garden Project in Decatur where I teach a class on how to have to responsibly keep backyard chickens. Just keep in mind that because you legally have backyard chickens as I do TODAY, doesn't mean the city in which you live can't change the laws and do to you what The City of Roswell is doing to me. ONE DAY YOU COULD BE WALKING IN MY SHOES AND IF THE CITY OF ROSWELL VOTES THIS AMENDMENT INTO LAW, I WILL BE CHICKEN LESS. I will be GIVING WAY FREE DAY OLD PULLETS TO EVERY PERSON TO ATTEND. Please wear something YELLOW to show our unity. I will be supplying coupons that will be honored the first week of March for up to 5 free day old pullets (2 per person, 5 per family) that attends. First they want to take away our chickens, next our GARDENS and before we know it we will all be eating government issued rice and beans. Please remember to wear YELLOW so they will know that we are all together!
