Cynwyd Heritage Trail, Towpath Bridge, Manayunk Brewery

We are re-visiting the Cynwyd Heritage Trail to take in the changes since our first visit. Work on the Trail (mostly locally-based volunteer efforts) is ongoing.

http://www.meetup.com/phillyhikes/events/42704562/ for pics, comments, etc., from last time.

One of the newest examples of the Rails-to-Trails movement, the Cynwyd Heritage Trail officially opened on October 23rd, 2011: two miles of paved recreational trail stretching from the Cynwyd train station to Rock Hill Road, with softer side trails, hillside views of Manayunk and the Schuylkill River, trees, grass, wetlands integration, and more.  The original Cynwyd Line connection to Manayunk via the Manayunk Bridge will be converted to a connecting recreational trail by the summer of 2013.

For our September 9th event we will take a quick tour of the historic, renovated 1890 Cynwyd Station, and then walk 1.5 miles down the trail to take a peek at the entrance to the viaduct.  At that point we will backtrack a bit to the beginning of a hiking trail which will lead us to some older rights-of-way, take in various historical sites, and traverse the Towpath Bridge across the Schuylkill River to the Manayunk Brewery, where we'll be finishing our first beer(s) by 2pm.  Hiking boots are advised for your comfort and safety, as the path to the Manayunk Brewery involves some "real" hiking.  (The Cynwyd Heritage Trail itself is mostly flat: if you choose to leave us before the hike to Manayunk, you can expect to get back to Cynwyd Station around 1pm or so.)  See the self-guided tour here http://cynwydheritagetrail.com/About.html for a bird's-eye-view.  (We will not be walking on the Penncoyd Bridge or Righter's Ferry Road.)

There are parking spaces at the Cynwyd train station (where we will be meeting), but I strongly suggest you *don't* bring your car: best connections are via the #44 and #65 buses, which stop on City Line Avenue at the Bala train station, a half mile away. (Please check www.septa.org for your best connection.) I'll be meeting those of you on the bus there, and we will walk the only way possible up Bala Avenue to historic Cynwyd station.  (If you catch the next bus, you should be able to join us before we leave the Trail for the hike to Manayunk.)  The Cynwyd Regional Rail Train (Bala is the next-to-last stop on the line) does not run on weekends (and has rather limited weekday service as well).  Return to Center City from Manayunk is available via the Manayunk-Norristown Regional Rail Train.  Please consult www.septa.org for bus and Regional Rail schedules and maps.  (Google maps accessible through the location link above, can also be helpful.)

The Cynwyd Heritage Trail is a collaboration among a number of interested groups and individuals: the Lower Merion Historical Society has been involved for perhaps the longest.  Board member Sarah Francis has generously agreed to serve as our historical tour guide once again for this walk. Special Thanks to Sarah for all her help in organizing this.

I'm looking forward to sharing this again!

hmm: 6 of you claim to have paid the yearly dues (which are $10) in person (as opposed to via paypal) this past Sunday, but the money I collected was $50: the math doesn't quite add up. If you paid less than $10, or suddenly find the $10 that you thought you paid me, please let me know. In the meantime, I'm not going to worry about it too much...
Thank You all for coming! Everyone seems to have had a good time (which is my goal, so I'm happy...)

ok, I found another $10 I didn't know I had, so that seems to be all square... Thanks again to everyone!

I'll be coming out on the #44 bus from 15th & JFK. Does anyone want to meet up in center city to ride out together? And could someone let me know whether the bus really does stop at the Bala train station on Sundays? The schedule on SEPTA's website makes it sound like it only stops at the Bala train station on limited weekday runs and that on weekends we have to ride an extra half-mile out to 54th & City Ave. - not a big deal, but I'd like to know what to expect!

Well, since nobody is saying otherwise, let's err on the side of meeting at the 10:40 bus - that way if it does that classic SEPTA move of not showing up or being super late, we should still be okay. Bring a book in case we end up in Bala way too early. :) I'll plan on being at 15th & JFK at 10:30; please say something here if you want me to be on the lookout for you. I look just like my profile picture, though I'll probably be wearing contacts. I'm pretty sure I'll be wearing a black shirt, green shorts, and a backpack.

as noted above, the walking portion of this event will take about two hours, but as this will be interspersed will talks about the trail, local history, etc., I believe we will be covering about 5 miles. (a steady walking speed is about 4 miles per hour). return is by train transferring to bus in center city. you can find info at www.septa.org, referencing the info included in the description above.

I'm curious about the length in miles and time of the hike, and how one gets back to the Bala station. Thanks.

Lisa, you may have read my comment below about rescheduling, posted June 9th. Part of the reason for rescheduling to September 9th was to avoid the inconvenience of the re-construction.

Is the cynwd station still under construction? I read soomewhere that it was and that it interfiers with the access t the trailhead.

    Jessica,
yes the bus stops at Bala station. (the limited weekday stops refers to the run out Conshohocken State road to Gladwyne via the Cynwyd station).

I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, but Sarah Francis has asked me to reschedule our Cynwyd Trail walk for September. Her primary reason for this was the low number of people who signed up, but the forecast of hot weather which is undoubtedly related, as well as the "under re-construction" (messy) state that the train station is currently in, make September a better option. There will likely be an update on the Manayunk Bridge by then as well.

If you are driving, please park in the lot behind BMW on Bala Avenue. Due to construction, the lot at the Cynwyd station will not be available.
