Nathan Gasser

This month we're co-meeting with the Philly Standards Organization - front-end developers passionate about web standards. Every PHP web developer has to interact with HTML/CSS front-end code at times, either writing it by hand, generating it in PHP, or interacting with code from another front-end developer. Learning their trade will be beneficial to any PHP developer working on websites.

From their website:

Come and join us for a presentation from, Tim Shortt, one of the Philadelphia Standards Organization’s first members (I think he bought the second round of drinks). The presentation will focus on some well known sites and if they pass or fail when it comes to standards.

Besides being instrumental in helping the PSO get its start, Tim currently is a Front End Developer at G2 Interactive and has over 7 years of experience developing web sites and applications for small businesses, in-house IT departments, and interactive design agencies.

    •  Boring. The guy presented information, which he obviously prepared for, but it was way too subjective. We could have argued for the better part of the evening about this stuff, web standards. I've been coding websites for quite some time. One thing we never had were standards. So lets not make that big of a deal about them. It's nice to have them, I'm not a hater. But do we need to be like the Nazis? Bottom line, IE will always go against standards because it makes people rely on their brand of craziness. Too bad we couldn't come up with a plan to make every browser use the same set of standards. But that wasn't what he was talking about. He was criticizing old sites for using old techniques. It was good to get out of the house though.

Good speech by Tim on Philadelphia websites lacking in web standards. There was some good audience interactivity as well on Flash issues and how to try and please everyone. It's also always fun to network with a bunch of fellow coders.
    •  A very informative and interesting talk. This was the first time I attended one of these, and I plan on attending more.
