29th Annual Hispanic Fiesta Part of the PECO Multicultural Series, Brings a Weekend of Hispanic Heritage to Penn's Landing
The 29th annual Hispanic Fiesta, hosted by
the Council of Spanish Speaking Organizations, Inc. (Concilio), will
include a variety of authentic music, dancing, entertainment and cuisine as
part of the PECO Multicultural Series. Celebrate the Hispanic culture on
the Great Plaza at Penn's Landing on Columbus Boulevard at Chestnut Street
on Saturday, July 12 and Sunday, July 13, 2008, from Noon until 8 p.m. This
FREE event is made possible by Independence Blue Cross, the presenting
sponsor of the 2008 Summer season at Penn's Landing.
This year, the Hispanic Fiesta will feature the music of mariachi, salsa,
bachata, merengue, samba, boleros, and a little Latin R&B. In addition, the
Fiesta will showcase artisan crafts and authentic foods from Puerto Rico,
Cuba, Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, Colombia, and other parts
of Latin America.
Legendary Puerto Rican singer/songwriter, author, musician, and poet Roy
Brown will be performing a "Nueva Troba" concert dedicated on the
Centennial of Puerto Rico's national poet, Juan Antonio Corretjer, followed
by salsa favorites such as Orquesta Canela and Ray Sepulveda on Saturday,
July 12th from 5:00 to 8:00 PM.
Ocho Y Mas, made up of internationally recognized Latin musicians/producers
Bobby Allende, Angel Fernandez, Ricky Gonzalez and Marc Qui?ones, will
headline Sunday, July 13th from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. Other artists featured at
this year's Fiesta will coincide with this year's Festival theme, "A
Tribute to the Region's Latino Music Scene," and include Brothers Band,
Jimmy Jorge and the Latin Express, Alberto Y El Hijo de Lola and more.
This free event, presented by PECO and the Council of Spanish Speaking
Organizations (Concilio), is one of the many cultural events of the
Philadelphia Puerto Rican Festival. This Festival, now in its 46th year,
works to publicize the importance of the Latino culture and the
contribution of the Hispanic community to the Philadelphia region.
Supporting the region's diversity has been a longstanding goal for PECO,
which has sponsored the multicultural festivals at Penn's Landing for the
past twelve years.
