This thread is a place to post potential topics. Topics here aren't the only topics that are up for discussion, but if you have an idea, by all means post it here.

Thanks to Leifa for coming up with most of these.

Mystery: Are the mysteries of life unexplainable or merely unexplained?

Drugs and Personality: Given the effectiveness of Prozac and other drugs used to treat mental illness, is personality a fixed quality or are we all just a composite of chemical reactions? If the latter, how come people can’t change?

Conformity: Why do people follow fashions, belief systems, or social agendas that are contrary to sense or even violate personal moral views?

Control Freaks: One common stereotype is the control freak. Why is there so much distaste for this kind of person?

Liberal Tenants. Some liberal tenants (such as don’t make moral judgments about your patients, students, children) have become so widespread that it almost seems as if anything goes nowadays. When and how did these ideas take root, and is there any way to keep the good and curb the bad aspects of liberal attitudes?

Patriotism: Is there a philosophical basis for patriotism, and what are the differing reasons for patriotism?

These potential topics came up in this weeks meeting. Thanks to Cobbie for writing these down (Cobbie is back. Yay!).

Is it important for people to be happy?

What is the source of rightness and wrongness?

Is there something wrong the choice of right and wrongness being decided in a community based on common

Because a good action is insignificantly small should you still do it? Why? (environment, things that only help future generations, philanthropy on a small scale)

Why do things for future generations, why not?

If you really believe that your morals are right, should you want others to believe like you?

The philosophy of prohibition -- when and how should a community forbid certain behaviors? Does prohibition work (reduce the behaviors)? when does it work? Can you prohibit murder? Speeding? Drinking? Sex?
