Should rights be distributed equally?

Strength, knowledge, power, populace and democracy; should rights be distributed equally?

This is the question we will debate during the last meeting of 2013. There is no prerequisite an no one is assumed to know anything about this prior to the meeting. This is just about sharing ideas.

The suggested reading for this discussion will be "Gorgias", on of Plato's dialog. As always, this is not mandatory in any way.

The notion of distributing rights equally may imply that the failure of such would suggest discrimination. Due to the subjective connotation associated with the term "rights" (especially within a society that is often preoccupied with emotionalism, subjectivity, and intuition), one may possible prefer the phrase - "offering opportunities in an equatable manner." In any event, I would strongly suggest avoiding the hasty generalization (or shall I say the uninformed, gut-reaction) of assuming that the equal distribution of rights ultimately translates into the equal outcomes. An example of such is the relationship between the existence of civil rights legislation and current educational outcomes among certain minority groups in the US.

On another note, how is the term "equally" defined. This would involve a matter of context in order provide an adequate response; unless the rationale is to provoke the aforementioned...

Thanks for your input Patrick. One of the subject that was also discussed was how rights to decide where a society is going (making of laws) was distributed vs knowledge of the subject matter treated.

Good December everyone. I hope you had a nice Thanksgiving week end.

As additional reading if you are interested and to offer a different but still relevant look on the question, I suggest a book called "Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking" by Susan Cain.
Don't feel like reading? Check the TED talk after the jump: http://www.ted.com/talks/susan_cain_the_power_of_introverts.html

If rights are not distributed equally, then they are not rights, they are privileges.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
