Reading Hegel's Science of Logic

  • August 28, 2013 · 2:00 PM
  • Private Residence

The Science of Logic is the center piece of Hegel's system and certainly one of the great works of philosophy.  One can make a good argument that Hegel's writings only cohere with a good comprehension of the three books of the logic. Seriously committed students are invited to meet each tuesday evening to read aloud and discuss this monumental book. Group will begin in september and finish sometime in 2015.

I imagine that a number of members are already aware of this resource; for those who aren't, here's a link to Richard Dien Winfield's lecture course on the SOL in MP3 format:

I'm not sure everyone got my email about the meeting:

We're meeting at my house: 361 Warren Street, Brooklyn NY

We'll be reading the A.V. Miller translation. I suggest we begin by reading the preface to the Phenomenology before we dig into the SOL. Perhaps we can get through it in the first session. Its the best introduction to Hegel, and its more of an intro to the SOL than the Phenomenology anyway - Hegel wrote it after completing the SOL.

    OK, looking forward!

Please update your status if you know you're not coming.

Wednesday at 2:00? August 28? For me, possible, but probably not so good for most readers.

I know, but Victoria needs it to be at that time (she's a grad student at Princeton) and only has that slot. Hopefully a few others can join. Will you?

Greeting! I got interested in Hegel through Marxism. Now I'm very interested in learning Hegel in his own terms. I'm familiar with system of Kant and Hegel among others.

I've crawled through the Phenomenology and the Lectures on Art and History, but have no training in even pre-Fregean logic, so this might be a bit steep for me. Yet to decide. Not many affordable editions out there.
