Never disappointed at this meetup, a great little group of people I enjoy discussing and learning philosophy with.

I should add this became relevant to me particularly in light of the discussion in the first chapter, which Freud engages in in answer to his friend's perspective on the psychic forces at play in embracing religion.

While reading these two chapters I did wonder about Freud's at times limited view of the mother and how Klein, Winnicott and the other object relations theorists would add to this discussion. In reference to this, I came across an interesting article comparing Melanie Klein's perspective to Freud's vis a vis the ideas explored in Civilization and its Discontents. Its perhaps a bit off track but I find it interesting to put it all in context.

    Hello friends,

Please join us in the neighborhood of Washington Square Park over the next few weeks for a close reading of Civilization and Its Discontents. This week we are preparing Chapters 1 and 2, starting on p. 4464 of the complete works of S. Freud, available at the link below along with a helpful secondary source by Jonathan Lear:

Please email [masked] for exact address and building access. Any contribution of snack or beverage is most welcome. Hope to see you there!
