Stendhal's 'The Red and the Black'

Pot Pourri Salon, the literary branch of the NY Continental Philosophy Meetup, has room for a few new members. We are finishing up Nietzsche's The Birth of Tragedy which was for us non-tragic, fun and rewarding. Previous reads include Proust, Dostoevsky, Melville, Freud.

We now move to the turbulent times of post-napoleonic France with Stendhal's The Red and the Black (translated by Catherine Slater, Oxford University Press, ISBN 978-0-19-953925-3).

We are planning to read this masterpiece over three sessions. For the first session, it's Chapters 1-24 (pages 4-176).

The salon reads "serious" literature but is not itself so serious that one-liners are not hugely appreciated - as is wine, limoncello and cranberry juice.
