Is there a God? The Teleological Argument

Last month we had a great discussion of the cosmological argument for the existence of God, and now it's time to discuss the other major a posteriori argument for God's existence--the Teleological Argument. The teleological argument basically says that all the intricate design in the universe argues for a purposeful First Cause. The apparent fine-tuning of the universe (the anthropic principle) is part of this argument. If you want to give a 5 min presentation (with handout) either supporting or opposing this argument, let me know.

I will post some links relevant to this. Feel free to do the same, or beat me to it.

I also plan to record the session for those who aren't able to come.

Hi Jay! Sorry for my late response. It would seem far more appropriate for you to start the discussion since you clearly have a lot of material to present on the topic. To be honest, I can't quite wrap my brain around exactly what the topic IS. I will try, however to continue with your metaphor by asking, what babies did I throw out with the bath water when I changed my world views?

Yes, I agree that most religions mirror some standard codes of morality shared across human cultures, often presenting explanations for the nagging voice of conscience inside us all (most of us, anyways). I do raise objection however, to the inevitable additions to the moral code that religions assert with their "legalities", which serve not to improve the human condition, but rather to restrict and conform it. Whether the rules be outwardly oppressive, or inwardly repressive as in ascetic thoughts and behaviors, these imposters of morality are not just counter-intuitive and superfluous, but potentially damaging to the people affected by them. If you are suggesting that one can keep the religion (the baby), but throw out the dogmatic legalities (the bathwater), then you have definitely worked towards improving religion's conflict with the humanities, but you are still no closer to establishing that it was necessary in the first place.

I enjoyed the presentations tonight. Unfortunately, there wasn't a whole lot of time for discussion, so I posted some of my thoughts on the discussion forum. :)

Incidentally, per your usual standard PowerPoint intros ... nicely done ... again. Good habit.

My dear friend, so much to say about that video. Frankly I am a little surprised by it. But who knows? May I offer one from an actual scientist? Them folks at Harvard sometimes know a thing or two. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U6QYDdgP9eg. And that was four years ago with new data all the time confirming this. All physical things in existence grow. They change over time and with energy (you know, the laws of thermodynamics) of course they grow more complex. Not by chance but by natural laws. The long road DNA, or trees, or suns, or life took for its current state to form grew naturally from the most basic components over a very long time.
