Seeking to figure out if I am a "Deep Thinker"? Enjoyed the group, still yrying to figure out what this brain is for...

We could have delved more deeply into the history of this topic. It is easy to mix up the changes during the Industrial Revolution with those that accelerated later with the birth of mass production. It is also easy to mix up mass production with capitalism and consumerism. The communists tried unsuccessfully to separate the three. We had fun with the many drawbacks to consumerism and what life might be like without mass production (think squirrels). I turn 70 on Wednesday so I'm likely to defend a planet that allows for longevity. Thanks for the fine discussion. It was fun.

Eric's question at the end of the session was particularly evocative. The "what should we do"? Educational change could come first--not to shut down the wonderful path to the new, but to relate it to the present. One student at my college, when I visited recently, spoke of program of study "in the context of the world we are really living in." I liked that. Speaking for my generation of 80-plus, what I try to do is make my footprint smaller every day without feeling anything but that this is my time to do this.

  • The Deep and Meaningful Conversation Meetup Group

This group of folks is a finely tuned gathering of thinking beings. And, for clarification "deep thinking" cannot be done without deep feeling in my view.

Very interesting and insightfully gifted members. What tells you that it is good, is when you go home and discuss the discussion with others--made an impression and a difference in life viewing. I will go again!

  • The Deep and Meaningful Conversation Meetup Group

Full disclosure: I've never been a participant in this group. I've only had the pleasure and the pain of sitting adjacent to their discussion on two occasions in the last year. The first time, I overheard this wonderful soundbite: "Unlike men, women just don?t appreciate anything that has to do with physics." The second time, I overheard a long-winded joke with Christianity served up as its punchline. Sure, everyone is entitled to his/her opinion, but both of these comments did little to make me want to join their group. Deep and meaningful, yes ... welcoming, no.

  • The Deep and Meaningful Conversation Meetup Group

An eclectic mix of genuinely friendly and thoughtful odd ducks, meant with highest regard. Everyone was welcoming and considerate with a variety of input, experiences, and background leading to a provocative mix of opinions, feelings, and "facts".

  • The Deep and Meaningful Conversation Meetup Group

I really enjoyed the chance to discuss some of the world's "big ideas" with people who could bring diverse perspectives and thought-provoking questions to the table.

  • The Deep and Meaningful Conversation Meetup Group

Good folks and meaningful discussion. I think we found that a "fact" was hard to define. I take it on faith that Center Street exists, at least for now.

  • The Deep and Meaningful Conversation Meetup Group

Because these meetings and discussions encourage insightful dialogue on a range of topics. Because these individuals are all bright, insightful, personable. Because there seem a dearth of social environments that lend themselves naturally to having the serious and amusing dynamics this group creates. And there is a healthy dose of humor......
