Who Are You?

Jonathan suggested this topic.

Who are you really? And how can you answer that question? What part of you is the result of your own accomplishments? What part of you is the result of other people's expectations? When did you first realize yourself as  unique and autonomous?

If you are defined by your given name, what about people with the same name? If you’re defined by your relationships, what happens as old friendships wane, people divorce, and family members die? If you’re defined by your physical being, what about people who lose a limb, or their hearing or sight? And consider that you turn over all the cells in your body on a fairly regular basis. The molecules that together defined “you” five years ago have all moved on.

What’s left? Do you call it your "soul"? Do you call it your "ego"? Or, is it enough to simply say, "It's me"?

We will be meeting in the Vista room on the right at the top of the stairs.

One's "self" is the only thing that we can use as a "reference" point, however our self is a contrived mass of beliefs about things that have been. One problem with that is everything that happens we take our own spin on, we think it's real, but the memory of the event is really a fiction we created based on our current "self". In essence everything we are is based on a fiction we told ourselves about what happened.
Personally I know I was autonomous for a long time, but am just beginning to understand the ramifications of that knowledge, i.e. we need not just choose from the "normal" list of decisions, but the world is full of options that we have eliminated from our rubicon for some strange reason. So go sing in the rain, dance in the snow, and let the options in cause we all need to experience life!

Well, I'll jump in. At the bottom, there is a point of consciousness. Not too much really human about that. From there up, it's one narrative or another. One story, one history, one set of beliefs or another. I don't know if I can honestly answer the question, "Who am I?" I can answer the question, "What is the narrative that is most in the foreground right now?"
What I find most funny, is that if I dig down deep enough, there is no "I". Not that I'm claiming non-dual consciousness. Just a certain lightness that comes with realizing that there is no I that I have to defend, or support, or believe in.

Hi! Another great topic! However- I will be on vacation so will miss this venue! And....to share- I know I do not talk much in these groups...I really enjoy listening- as I find I learn and take in so much more when I focus on listening. In time, I will attain a balance of conversing and listening!
Till the next time... Be well! Happy Spring!

Looking at my own family as well as friends I have to say that each individual person is living in his/her own framework.
In other words it is very difficult to change the character of a person

    Who am I --??
Depends on the mood, the situation I am in.
want to know my general situation? Depends.
    Age, financial situation, environment, health.
I Myself? generally happy, missing my wife.
