Philosophy for Real Life: Monday Discussion Group

We will continue the discussion of ethics and morality, focusing on human nature. Please read the discussion thread titled "Human Nature." (Click the link or go to Discussions / Message Board / Philosophy for Real Life Monday night group / HUMAN NATURE.)  For additional background, see the blog post titled "Imagine There’s No Morality" located at http://www.bmeacham.com/blog/?p=991.

This group typically reads a short article, often a blog post by Bill Meacham, ahead of time and discusses it at the meeting. We approach philosophy as free human beings engaged in the world. The discussion format is free-form, and it is always quite lively.

Carl: long posts (up to 7500 characters, I think) generally go on the message board. You can get to the message board by clicking "Discussions" at the top of this page, and selecting "Message Board" from the dropdown menu. There are several threads in progress there.

Please do not initiate a two minute rule. I would rather remain silent than be forced to listen to truncated ideas.
Also, I wrote a long piece for this discussion and was informed after the fact that I was limited to 1000 characters - didn't know that???

Since the group is growing in number, maybe we should ask Bill to establish a 2 minute rule or something like that?

One way or the other Bill will have to exert more control. Else the views we hear will be skewed towards those most eager to talk.

I think that I really like Cheryl's approach because it would allow us to test both possibilities something new and evaluate how it works.

I greatly enjoyed the discussions. What a pleasure to be around thoughtful and passionate "idea"lists.

I'll be posting the next discussion topic about 'self' here soon - I hope by Saturday.

the discussion went well. I feel like we rushed at times. it what alot of ideas to digest and sometimes we went on tangents but that is not a bad thing. I think most people liked what emerged for the evening....I really liked what Jeff said.

It looks like we'll be covering the self next time. And the discussion board should get interesting in the mean time.
