This APDG Meetup group will focus on contemporary philosophers as defined by Professor Rick Roderick in his Teaching Company course, "The Self Under Siege:Philosophy in the 20th Century". Professor Roderick will discuss the insights offered by such names as Heidegger, Sartre, Marcuse, Habermas, Foucalt, Derrida, Baudrillard. He suggests our current situation with the following quote, "The complex systems under which we live (economic, technological, global) have put the self "under siege", overloaded with information and images that offer no meaning for us. We have difficulty making any sense out of our lives."
The meeting will open with discussion of the video lecture of the previous meeting, then move to the viewing of the next video lecture and then adjourn. IT IS STRONGLY SUGGESTED THAT ATTENDEES READ THE RECOMMENDED READING MATERIAL AND/OR THE POSTINGS BY MEMBERS ON THE DISCUSSION BOARD. WE WILL MEET EVERY OTHER MONDAY GIVING MEMBERS TIME TO CONSIDER THE LECTURE AND RESEARCH THE PHILOSOPHER DISCUSSED BY PROFESSOR RODERICK. SUGGEST CHECKING DISSCUSION POSTINGS COUPLE OF DAYS BEFORE MEETING FOR ANY INSIGHTS, RECOMMENDED READING.
The lecture tonight will be #2 in the series of 8...
