Philosophy for Real Life: Monday Discussion Group

CANCELED - No meeting this time as the moderator will be traveling out of town.

This group typically reads a short article, often a blog post by Bill Meacham, ahead of time and discusses it at the meeting. We approach philosophy as free human beings engaged in the world. The discussion format is free-form, and it is always quite lively. Links to the articles will be posted in advance of each meeting.

On Monday, we discussed Joe Cruz' paper on epistemology. Leonard, who officiated, asked at the end of the meeting for suggestions about a topic for next time. I suggested explanation as a topic.

I'm more interested in knowledge as it relates to explanation than I am in "pure" knowledge, whatever that might be. In any case, I think some of the most important knowledge we claim to have comes to us by a process of explanation (theory), whether it's formal or informal. So, the question of what makes for a good explanation is closely tied to the question of knowledge.

I offer the following Ted Talk by the physicist David Deutsch as a possible starting point for a discussion of this:

Anyone interested in meeting Monday evening(July 28)? Maybe taking Gary's suggestion of David Deutsch on explanation?

If 7 or 8 respond yes, I will call La Madeliene
