Book Club Potluck - "The Hedgehog and the Fox"

  • Mar 8, 2013 · 7:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

This Meetup is one of two book club meetings this evening. Sign up for this meeting if you want to read and discuss "The Hedgehog and the Fox" by Isaiah Berlin. Sign up for the other meeting if you prefer "Without Guilt and Justice" by Walter Kaufmann. Since these meetings will take place simultaneously, do not sign up for both.

Isaiah Berlin's book is out of print, but is widely available in libraries and easily found used online. For those of you interested in the Kaufmann, you can download a PDF from this website. Go to the "More" menu above and select "Files". Terry tells me that the first 61 pages contain the essential reading material.

The April poll results are in, and the winners are: Richard's pick "The Blank Slate" by Steven Pinker and Orson's pick "The Beginning of Infinity" by David Deutsch. I'll host the discussion on the Pinker book. Any volunteers to host the April discussion on the Deutsch book? Let me know.

Since we are always planning ahead, I've started the poll for our May selections. You'll find that under the "More" menu at the top of this page. Anyone who is a member of this Meetup can submit a title for the poll. Just send me an email or post on this site, and I'll add your selection. However, I will only include one title from each member. If you submitted a title last month, I've rolled it over into the new poll. If you want to change your recommendation, just let me know.

As always, it's essential that everyone who comes to the meeting reads the book in its entirety. Please also bring a food or drink item for the potluck.

Happy reading!

UNSURE if I can make it - a bad head cold refuses to leave after a week. But I'll try!

If you're ill, do us all a favor and stay home! Take care of yourself. Get well. We'll look forward to seeing you next time.

For those interested in contributing to the prison book club fund, I just spent $195 dollars on books. My address is 7306 w. Maryland Ave. Lakewood CO 80232. Whatever you can and want to do is appreciated.

I see Pinker's back on the reading list, this time on the Maypole. Just wanted to point out to voters that it's a tome of epic proportions - 832 pages (Blank Slate is a mere 500 or so). He's an excellent writer and thinker, but parsimony is not among his other virtues!

Ahh, my error. $.99 for a self published book discussing it I now proudly own. -)

I expect that's not your most expensive error, Marc

I hadn't thought of that. For those who might be interested, the book is "Pursuing Justice: Foxes, Hedgehogs and the Baby Boom Legacy" by Charles Hays.
