Kit will host the June 14 discussion of Shimon Edelman's The Happiness of Pursuit: What Neuroscience Can Teach Us About the Good Life. Karl suggested this book. Here's a link: http://www.amazon.com/The-Happiness-Pursuit-Neuroscience-Teach/dp/B00ANYKG48.

The other option for June is Russell's pick Beyond the Hoax by Alan Sokal. See the June 21 Meetup.

The July poll results are in, and the winners are: Terry's pick, Nietzsche: Life as Literature by Alexander Nehamas, and Lincoln's pick, On Revolution by Hannah Arendt. Marc has volunteered to host the Nehamas Meetup. Both Marc and Richard have offered to host in August. Let me know if you'd be willing to host. I need two volunteers per month. My priority is finding someone to take the Sokal Meetup in June, but I'm willing to hold it at my place if no one steps forward. I also need someone to host the Arendt book in July. August and September are wide open.

Since we are always planning ahead, I've started the poll for our August selections. You'll find that under the "More" menu at the top of this page. Anyone who is a member of this Meetup can submit a title for the poll. Just send me an email or post on this site, and I'll add your selection. However, I will only include one title from each member. If you submitted a title last month, I've rolled it over into the new poll. If you want to change your recommendation, just let me know.

As always, it's essential that everyone who comes to the meeting reads the book in its entirety. Please also bring a food or drink item for the potluck.

Happy reading!

Newcomer Kate introduced us to a new format and structure which I thought worked very well for us, and I will suggest that we use it again in future meetups. Thanks, Kate.

    Any potential discussion questions?

great questions Karl! I would perhaps add something like: 11) what parts of the mind are "virtual" and what does that mean?

Is that author implying that humans are good computational machines? Although we may be good at simple Newtonian computations, when it comes to estimating odds and long-term risk, people are notoriously bad.

Possible question: If you already felt that happiness was a process and not a destination did you learn anything new?

yeeaaa! I finished book. Most I read in last few days. For long time there were only 7 "yes" RSVPs with 7 open spots. Now still 2 open spots. I wonder if it's the difficulty to get into this book. During the first couple chapters several weeks ago, I seriously thought of stopping and dropping out. If there was a wait list, it's possible I would had. I picked reading back up in the last week. I am glad I did, because despite the problem getting into the book at beginning it was worth getting to the end of book. But beginning of book was hard to "mentally juggle Homer, Shakespeare, flying marmots, cameo appearances of movie comedians, lovesick yeast, and whatnot". It's a interesting but not always easy to follow writing style this author has.
