Book Club, Wine Tasting & Potluck - "Justice as Fairness"

For our July 13 meeting, we are reading "Justice as Fairness" by John Rawls.

For those of you looking ahead, we plan to read "How the Laws of Physics Lie" by Nancy Cartwright for August and "The Phenomenology of Perception" by Maurice Merleau-Ponty for September. We have also talked about reading "Existentialism is a Humanism" by Sartre, "All Things Shining" by Hubert Dreyfus, "The Social Conquest of Earth" by EO Wilson, "Philosophy and the Mirror of Nature" by Rorty, and "Something from Nothing" by Lawrence Krauss in upcoming meetings.

I look forward to seeing all of you in July. As always, it's essential that everyone who comes to the meeting reads the book in its entirety. It's also essential for the potluck that everyone brings something for the meal.

Happy reading!

We have a little family emergency which may delay or prevent my attendance :( Although I love Rawls' ideas, I would like to register an apology to readers: I did not realize his writing style was as dry as a bone in the desert! My goodness, these rationalists need to get some writing skills!

Interesting consequence of meritocracy and how it can negatively impact justice -

Looking forward to our discussion! It would be best if everyone parked either in the driveway or along the grass across the street from the house. We are "sprinkler head challenged" and frequently have to replace them after having visitors.

    See you Friday.
