Any aspect of philosophy or applied philosophy is relevant to this Meetup, including traditional and modern views of philosophical questions. We invite anyone who is interested - you don't need a degree in philosophy to participate!
Relevant discussion topics include any aspect of: (a) ethics (what things are good? what things are good for us to do, for ourselves or others? what would make a better society?); (b) the nature of knowledge (how do we know what is true? by evidence, intuition, authority, or what?); (c) the nature of art and beauty; (d) the nature of the universe, life, and the place of life in the universe. (Those questions can include: philosophy of society, philosophy of history, philosophy of technology, political philosophy, philosophy of science, philosophy of economics, medical ethics, philosophy of art, etc.)
At the beginning of our discussions, people suggest possible topics, and then we pick one to discuss that day. We can also consider choosing a topic ahead of time for our next Meetup.
A diversity of views is welcome, for open-minded discussion, where the aim is to learn from each other.
We usually go out to dinner afterwards. Also, we sometimes go to movies as a group, and have some other activities; there are also other possibilities, such as museums, historic sites, etc.
Some members also participate in another local group, which includes aspects of philosophy: the Science, Society & Science Fiction group: http://science.meetup.com/81/
