At this month’s Philly Net Tuesday (May 3), we’ll explore the social web of self-directed learning, community education, and online knowledge sharing environments. What does all this mean for the future of education and how can we use it for social good?

We’ll be gathering at 6:00 PM on Tuesday, May 3 at the Friends Center, 1501 Cherry Street.

The evening will have two main parts to it. First, a panel (details coming soon) will lead a discussion of the emerging resources, technologies and social patterns that are helping people share knowledge in new ways. Then, you’ll be able to check out many of these online services for yourself, with your own laptop, or one from a cart of laptops provided by Philadelphia OIC's mobile computer lab (NOMAD). We plan to live-stream at least the first part of the evening at http://phillynetsquared.org/live, and support a Twitter backchannel (hashtag: #phlnet2).

This event is geared towards…

  • nonprofits and others who want to learn about new ways to: a) satisfy learning needs of their staffs and clients, and b) help their staffs or clients share their knowledge and expertise with the world.
  • techies who want to learn about some cutting edge educational applications that can be used and repurposed for various needs
  • citizens who just want to learn about some amazing new educational opportunities for self-improvement (via learning or teaching).

Some of the services that will be highlighted include:

  • Udemy (http://www.udemy.com...), which enables anyone to take or create their own online courses, and provides them with everything they need to create great learning experiences over the internet.
  • Peer 2 Peer University (http://p2pu.org...), a grassroots open education project that organizes learning outside of institutional walls and creates a model for lifelong learning alongside traditional formal higher education.
  • Lynda.com (http://www.lynda.com...), which produces video tutorials and invaluable trainings on thousands of technical topics.
  • Khan Academy (http://www.khanacadem...), which pioneers a model of “flipping the classroom” of shared learning with thousands of educational videos.
  • The Open Textbook Initiative (http://www.opentextbo...), a registry of textbooks (and related materials) which are free for anyone to use, reuse and redistribute; run by the Open Knowledge Foundation (http://www.okfn.org...).

Bu these are just the tip of the online leaning iceberg! We’re compiling a more complete list to distribute at the event itself, and we want your help! Go to http://phillynetsquared.org/resources to see the growing list. Then, either add another online educational resource you know about, or add a comment or review of one that’s already on the list. Let’s share our own knowledge about all of these resources to help us share our knowledge!

RSVP's are appreciated for planning purposes, but not required.
