Hi john, we are meeting in Temecula at Karl Strauss at 12, then heading down to calumet to pick terry up.

      March 16, 2014

  • John

A conflicting shoot opportunity came up and I will need to bow out of this one (but seeing as there are over 30 photographers attending, I don't think I'll be missed!). Have fun everyone. I'll try to get some of my own before the next meeting.

Hi, i was just looking around the web and i found this link on long exposures and it looks like there are a bunch of associated links at the bottom of the page. Looks like some good information both for beginner and advanced. The link is: http://digital-photography-school.com/long-exposure-photography

Hi I am new to the group and this is going to be my 1st meeting and shoot so I have a couple of ???'s 1st off should what am I to bring besides my camera and is it ok that I am a beginner as far as using all the features my camera has to offer? I also have an extra tripod if that is something we are using. I would also like to offer to carpool with anyone who is interested. I drive a suburban which seats 7. I live in wolf creek a mile from pechanga. :)

    March 10, 2014

    • Tim

Hi Renee, you will need your tripod and a ND filter. As far as camera settings, i can help you with that when we get out their, you will need to shoot in manuel mode or bulb depending on the length of exposure. A cable release would help you out, but you can use your self timer. hope this helps.

      March 10, 2014

Hi Tim thank you for your help. I feel I may be out of my league here but love a challenge and feel I will be able to keep up see you all soon

hey everyone, here is the final location,[masked] Kettner Blvd San Diego, CA 92101
we should arrive here around 6pm give or take. i have not been to this spot, if the freeway fences are too high we are going to improvise and find another spot.

Hello everyone, we are a week away from the shoot. I am really looking forward to this one, Lets talk transportation, as of now we are meeting at karl strauss in temecula at 12pm, we will head from their to calumet escondido to pick up anyone in north county we should get their around 12:40. Cindra is riding down with me and i believe terry is as well, that leaves 1 spot left in my car. Please if you guys can car pool do it, it will be a lot easier as we will be shooting at 3 separate locations. I have already posted the map links to the first two spots and i will post the third in the next few days. if you guys have any questions or concerns please post them or call me.

    March 8, 2014

    • Kelley

I'd love to ride with someone but unfortunately, I'll have to cut my time short due to a prior commitment. The latest I can stay is probably 4:30-5:00.

      March 9, 2014

    • John

I'd like to carpool too. But my plans are kind of up in the air now due to a new calendar conflict. I don't mind driving anyone (have room for three more), but I may not have a concrete plan until the day before. If there was more of an itinerary with timeframe it would be really helpful in making plans...

Hello everyone, i just found an amazing product for cleaning your image sensor. Its called a sensor gel stick, it can be purchased through photography life.com, in order to get it you have to get on the waiting list it is on back order and they are the only supplier in the U.S. its pretty amazing how easy it can clean dust and oil off of a sensor without any liquid.

    1 · February 28, 2014

I bought one back a month or so ago. Love it! So easy to use and safe as can be. Caution: since you must keep the mirror up while cleaning, be sure to plop in a fully charged battery before cleaning. If your camera shuts down while you're cleaning your camera's sensor, bad juju.

No need to take your camera in to have it done and get stiffed $50 or whatever for what you can do at home. No worries; easy to do, especially with the gel stick. Once you get over your initial fear of cleaning it yourself, you'll wonder why you haven't done it before.

Hello everyone, Kelley and i made it out to the beach on monday to take some long exposure shots, we had a great time. I want to tell you guys about my experience with my variable ND filter. When i fist started using it i had it blocking 8 stops of light and was getting uneven light across the image, just like john was telling me was happening to him. Well after experimenting i figured out that it was even from 2-6 stops, so i just started shooting it at these settings and was happy with the results. A workaround if you do have one of these filters is to use the shadows slider in lightroom to even out the exposure. I have posted a couple shots from our shoot in the urbex photo gallery. Thats it for now, let me know if you guys have any questions or concerns.

I am fairly new at photography and am wondering if anyone here can help me understand what filters I should be buying for my camera so that I may attend a meet up. I have a Nikon d7000. Please bear with me if my questions seem silly. Thank you guys! :)

Anyone heading to the beach for practice anytime soon?

    February 20, 2014

    • John

The waterfall at Redhawk is the primary water feature in Temecula, I just didn't mention it because it isn't all there is. I want to try this effect over at the beach at the Montage Resort in Laguna. I am available Monday but have a big workload so not likely to join a SD excursion but will see how it goes. If anyone wants to do the local Redhawk thing, so not driving an hour away and an hour back, I can do that on just about any day. Would also like to get a subject in a shot there and mix it with this effect.

      2 · February 22, 2014

    • Kelley

I would like to try Laguna too but can't do it until the week after next. Does anyone want to meet at the Redhawk waterfall on Wednesday then?

    February 21, 2014

Great! Wednesday sound good? I'll go wherever. If we do go to a beach, I don't want to go too far though (just an hour or so away).

    February 20, 2014

I think they sell some ND's at Best Buy, actually, but likely going to be kit lens diameters. May be able to find as much as a 3-stop ND there but more likely a 2-stop. All those filters at BB go for about $20.

My husband and I would like to join this group and attend this upcoming meet up. Wish this meet up was before our trip to Iceland (Feb 23- Mar8) so we could get in more practice with existing filters. I've gotten brownish green streaks occasionally with my variable ND filter. So I purchased a set of Tiffen ND filters to use instead. But after reading comments below...now I wonder it it will help. Any words of wisdom are appreciated before our trip.

    February 17, 2014

    • Tim

Hi Herman, the only streaking I've heard of from long exposure is light leaking in through the eye piece, I haven't heard of any streaking caused from variable nd filters, so if your eyepiece is closed during the exposure I'm not sure what else could be causing that.

      February 18, 2014

  • John

If you have no budget for a $50-$300 filter, you can try something like this (as long as you have software for color-correcting). http://www.instructables.com/id/DIY-10-10-Stop-Neutral-Density-ND-Filter/

Another thing to try is using two polarizers or some sort of polarizing film. Placing them both in front of your lens, rotate them willy-nilly, creating light and dark from almost nothing to pretty near complete blackout.

      February 17, 2014

    • Tim

Hi Ginny, that link didn't work.

      February 16, 2014

    • Tim

      that should be fine.

      February 17, 2014

  • Tim

Hey guys, i just ordered a variable ND filter that goes from 2-9 stops on B&H photo.com for $50 with free shipping and no tax. They have some really good pricing.

    1 · February 15, 2014

    • John

I bought the $150 Tiffen variable ND from B&H two years ago and plunked down the cash just to avoid problems I read about with others...but I have not been happy with it despite the great reviews. When you use it really stopped down it creates a variable effect (so not uniform). But, haven't used it in almost a year so I am looking forward to trying it out again at this meetup. Another trick for those that do not have one or want to spend money on one is a $4 piece of welding glass which you can get at Home Depot. It's like, a crazy 15 stops of light but that is what I used first and it did a good job for my pier shots I was taking with it. I will bring that too.

Hi Geraldine, one thing that is nice is that you can use your slower lenes as we will be doing long exposures. I would encourage you to watch the Kelby video for long exposures that Tim emailed us about. It has a lot of great info. It's especially good for info on ND filters and how to use them.

    February 3, 2014

  • Tim

Hello everyone, do me a favor and watch Matt k's class on long exposure photography. If you don't own a neutral density filter you should get one before this shoot. I'm thinking of shooting at the beach to get some water movement, maybe tide pools or somewhere with bigger rocks, and finishing off downtown sd to get some light trails from the cars at night. If u have any questions on this shoot post them here or send me an email.

As an aside, is anybody else concerned (and not surprised in the least) that Google has apparently let the niK Software they purchased a year ago or so languish and be forgotten? If so, what a shame, as this has got to be some of the best photo editing software plugins available.

Looks like Google raped it for Snapseed and has cast aside the rest. Reminds me of Peter Paul Rubens "The Rape of the Sabine Women".

onOne software came out with their version 8 of Perfect Photo Suite recently, and looks like it will replace niK as Top Dog, unless Google pulls a quickie and releases a sooooper update to the niK line. Time to take a hard look at onOne...

Hospitals and Horseshoe Beach in La Jolla offers lots of rock shelves for scurrying around on. If timed for a low tide, makes a great place to photograph. Perfect for long exposure shore shots.
