HIKE -- ALTA TRAIL (South Mountains)



This trail is open only once a month in South Mountain Park.. We will walk the ridge of the northern mountain of South Mountain Park… the Ma Ha Tauk Range.



Distance: 4.8 miles

Time: 3-4 hours

Difficulty: moderate

Trail: dirt and rocky mountain trail

Trailhead Elevation: 1560 ft.

Elevation gain: 870 ft.

Parking: asphalt lot w/ no facilities

Tailhead GPS: 33° 19’ 48” N, 112° 06’ 22” W

Destination GPS: 33° 19’ 49” N, 112° 08’ 39” W

Entry fees: NO

Dogs: OK on leash



Always carry and drink plenty of water!

Sunscreen and insect repellent is advised.

Supportive footwear is also advisable.

SAFETY FIRST… we have no medical provisions.

How to find us: Meet at trailhead parking lot (directions below)… If lost or late, call cell[masked]-5945.


TO GET THERE: take Central Avenue south into South Mountain park. Once you enter the park, stay on the main road, passing the stone buildings that mark the visitor center. Continue on the main road, following the signs for the San Juan lookout, for 2.5 miles (2.0 miles from the stone buildings) to the small trailhead parking on your left. Keep right.


Google says this trail head is about 25 min. from the intersection of the 51 and I-10.

Google says this trail head is about 40 min. from the intersection of the 101 and I-17.
