Time for another walk through the Phoenix Mountain Reserve just for the pleasure of walkin’ and talkin’! This time we’re going around (and up?) Lookout Mountain. The circumference portion of this hike is considered an “easy” hike and it is about 2.6 miles (1.5 hours?). Following that, you may wish to join me (and others?) on a trek to the top and back. That is a steep trail (called “moderate”) but short (1/2 mile each way… total less than an hour?) and offers spectacular views. To get there take the Bell Rd. exit from the 17 or 51. Proceed to 16th STREET and turn south and follow it about 1 mile to the small trailhead parking lot… we will meet at the conspicuous water tank there. Here are maps of the area and other information: http://www.arizonensi... http://phoenix.gov/PA... here’s a photo of Lookout Mountain from North Mountain: http://www.gemland.co... and for those not going to top (or even if you do) here is an interesting side trip (good for kids too)… “Somewhere over the rainbow” rock garden and junk yard: http://www.gemland.co... http://www.phoenixnew... When I Google-mapped it, it looks like a junkyard, reachable by following 20th St. south from Greenway Parkway. As the road bends west it changes names to Winchcomb and apparently runs directly into the junkyard. There is a nice Park close by too (Lookout Mountain Park)…. 14401 N 17th St., [masked]. Although heat is no longer a problem, be sure to carry and drink plenty of water .. I will bring some extra. I will drive a red Sebring convertible with friendly bumper stickers…. cellphone: [masked] Our meetup walks/hikes will always be slow-paced and conducive to social banter of interest to heathens, although I am also interested in the local geology and wildlife. There has been a tendency lately for some hikers to go for brunch and/or brew following the event.
