HIKE the HIEROGLYPHIC TRAIL (Superstition Mountains)

This “FAIRLY EASY” hike is named after the hundreds of petroglyphs found on cliffs of Hieroglyphic Canyon surrounding the pools nestled at the base of Superstition Mountains. The trail features a superb cactus selection including saguaro, several cholla varieties, ocotillo, hedgehog, prickly pear, and mammilaria.

The trail is fairly short (3-4 miles) with only moderate elevation gain (570 ft.). Our hikes are generally at a pace conducive to social banter of interest to heathens, and allowing for time for photography of the local geology and wildlife. Allowing for time in the petroglyph canyon and pools for exploring and perhaps a snack, expect this hike to last about 3-4 hours.

For the asking, I have handouts discussing petroglyphs, geology of the area, and plant and animals we’ll likely encounter. Also I carry reference books for after the hike.

How to find us: Meet at trailhead parking lot, or carpool location. (See directions below) …. If lost or late, my cell is[masked]-5945.

TO GET THEREfrom Phoenix head out highway 60 toward Apache Junction and go about 23 miles past the 101 to the end of the freeway, and continue on 7 more miles and between mileposts 202 -203 go left onto Kings Ranch Road heading north. Kings Ranch Road is 14.1 miles east of Power Road for reference. There is a Walgreens at that intersection which can serve as a staging location to facilitate carpooling and/or creating a car caravan to the trailhead about 4.5 miles to the trailhead.

TO GET THEREfrom Walgreens (at 60 & Kings Ranch Road) go 2.8 miles north to Baseline and then turn right (east) and go 0.2 mile and turn left (north) onto Mohican and go 0.4 mile and turn left (west) onto Valley View (naturally turns North, and turns into Whitetail Road) and go about 0.5 mile to Cloudview and turn right (east) and go about 0.5 mile to the trail head.

Google says this trail head is about 45 min. from the intersection of the 101 and 60, or a little over an hour from the intersection of 101 and 17. I suggest allowing another 15 minutes for travel through town.

IMPORTANT MESSAGE FOR CARPOOLERS:

Carpooling can save gas but also enhance the social experience. If you’d like to carpool, you must contact others for arrangements. You could email members or post in the comments section on this announcement page.

I think I'm gonna try to make this hike...but would definitely love to carpool with someone.

    I'm at 7th St & 101, but I can travel to you.

Tammy, is the Fuddmobile full up? I know where Al lives now. What time?

Sorry, I just read through my emails. We already made plans to leave my place (27th ave and Bethany) at 8. If anyone really needs a ride from Al's and doesn't mind waiting a few extra minutes, text me and we'll be there :)

Don't think I'm going to make this one; it's more than an hour from my house to the trailhead, and it would mean missing both of the Shy Gals and Gals Club of Phoenix Meetups tomorrow to which I already RSVP'd "yes" before this hike was posted.

Al, I will show up at your place at 8:00 am or before (the usual activation call will be appreciated). The Tyger Tank will be available as a transport vehicle if needed, but you all can sort that out Sunday.

We'll be there at 8 am as well. If we're not, that means we're not going to make it (late-night plans Saturday), so don't wait for us. :-)

This will be my first time doing something with this group. Is there a specific area, landmark, or person I should look for?

    February 5, 2014

    • Ja K.

My profile is a photo of my dog, you can look for her. Usually there are others dogs in the group, too. I doubt you'll have a problem finding us.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
