Phoenix Sonoran Preserve - North

This hike is rated EASY

Starting at 5:30 a.m.

This beautiful hike is in the new north area of the Phoenix Sonoran Preserve!

You’ll love the altitude in the North Phoenix / Desert Hills area and the softer trails too.  Yes that’s right; not many rocks!  What a nice treat for the feet.  Hiking boots are surely recommended but if your ankles are strong you could enjoy this hike in decent athletic shoes.  We will traverse the Sidewinder and Ocotillo Trails in a big loop.  This is a wonderful fitness hike with views galore.

While rated “easy” this is more of a moderate hike because of the distance and the summer heat.  There are lots of little ups + downs and climbs when you don’t expect them… even though you will see them ahead of time.  We will have unlimited possibilities in this area during winter and when the permanent TH (trailhead) opens.  The pace will be normal-to-moderate and we will take rest breaks often.  Please be in decent hiking shape to complete the hike with our small group.

We need to leave ON TIME to take advantage of beneficial shade in the hike.  The hike is restricted to 12 hikers, including me, because of limited parking at the temporary TH.  Please do not RSVP for this hike if you have no intention of attending.  This hike is not cross-posted with Trail Mix to keep the group small.

There are no facilities at the temporary trailhead, so take care of business before you arrive.  There is a Circle K on Seventh Street and Carefree Highway if you are arriving from the east, or check out McDonald's at Freeway 17 and Carefree Highway if you are coming from the west.

Bring plenty of water and wear a hat or head-covering.  We tend to lose the wind this time of year, especially during the mornings so sweat will be abundant.

DISTANCE:  5.2 miles roundtrip

ELEVATION GAIN:  200 feet + more than once

TRAIL STYLE:  Loop

DURATION:  2.0 hours

DOGS:  Yes, if leashed

FACILITIES:  NONE

WEBSITE: Trail Map

DIRECTIONS:  Take Freeway 17 north to Carefree Highway, exit and travel east on Carefree Highway for approximately 3 miles to the temporary trail head which is a wide dirt shoulder on the south side of Carefree Highway just before, or west of, Seventh Avenue.  If you are coming from the east, get to North Cave Creek Road and Carefree Highway and head west.  It is about 7 miles to Seventh Avenue; you can make a left-hand turn at Seventh Avenue and then make an immediate right into the parking area.

I like the hikes that are during the weekend because my husband can go with and I like them really early because I have lots of appointments. Can't wait for the next one. SERIOUSLY

Great hike! Awesome group and very kind and caring. The smaller group was kinda nice for getting to know people better. Jim was right about the softer dirt trails and getting to see all the hot air balloons was a bonus.

Thanks for another great hike, Jim! Loved the scenery, and a great smaller group. Now, I will go sit down (might not be able to get back up) and look at all my tourist pictures! :)

We will all be glued to our chairs the rest of today, Rachel. Starting a hike early gives us more time to sit! It was tremendous having you on the last two hikes; thank you for joining our Group!

But don't you feel a nice glow, too, John? I'm not gonna lie either... the chair is where I will be for a while!

    A great Hike ~ A great Group ~ and a great Team!!

It was wonderful having each and every one of you on this hike! Thank you all for coming. Whow! There must be something very special about this hike… and I love to hear all the laughter behind me. Ron found one of the “Are you kidding me?” spots and he vocalized it!

Judy and I would like to sincerely thank Sudhakar and John J for providing extra care to one of our hikers.

    Guess what? IT WAS FUN.

Hey Jim, anyway I can still join you guys tomorrow? I notice 2 of the 12 are +1s, so I thought maybe that would help the park situation. Let me know. If not, I'll just wait for the next one!
