Lookout Mountain Circumference Trail

This hike is rated EASY.

Starting at 6:00 a.m.

Come on out for an early Saturday morning hike at Lookout Mountain and beat the heat! This trek will take us around the #308 trail in a nice big loop. There are definitely some uphill climbs, so while it's rated easy, first-timers will have to work it a bit.  The pace will be moderate with a few rest stops along the way.

Bring lots of water, snacks, sunscreen, and a camera.  Sturdy hiking boots are recommended.

NOTE:  Park restrooms open approximately 0600.

I love how this group is vigilant for the safety and well-being of each other! Special thanks to Judy & Theresa for availing themselves to lend a hand and be a support to teammates. What great peer leaders and role models they are! And all under the great leadership of the fearless Jim K!

Nice large group of hikers this morning! Thanks for coming out, folks! It was fantastic to see P2BH make a statement this time and ATTEND the hike; we only had three no-shows plus one other no-show from Trail Mix. It's rather impressive to fill the parking lot on an early morning in late July, eh?

Other notes: I am pleased that Theresa was so delighted with the high humidity. If you are happy Theresa, I am happy. Also it was interesting that Ms. Stephanie finally caught up with me at the end! As always, thank you to Judy for sweeping.

Hello Hikers! I have been waking to the sound of thunder the past couple mornings but I've not seen any rain. TWC has just revised the Saturday morning forecast:

"Isolated thunderstorms in the morning, then skies turning partly cloudy late. High 103F. Winds S at 5 to 10 mph. Chance of rain 30%."

Weather forecasts are unreliable this time of year, so we will just have to see what the conditions are like in the morning. Two things we can be assured of: the dew point will be out-of-sight and humidity will be very high, so sweat will be abundant. Bring a towel with you tomorrow!

If there is any significant rainfall right at hike time, or if there is lightning in the area, I will call off the hike. I will be at the TH and call the hike from there, since I have to meet with some of you tomorrow. Have a great night! Let’s hope for a wild, strong wind tomorrow and maybe we won’t need those towels!

Any suggestions on hiking shoes? What do you feel has worked best for you? I have old tennis shoes and my running shoes? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. :)

Hi Cindy. I cannot recommend any specific type or brand of hiking shoes or boots. I will say that if you are going to attend many hikes, I strongly recommend you get sturdy hiking boots for all terrain. Not sure what works best for me yet because I have two pairs thus far (different brands) and there are things I like about both and things I do not like about both. Old tennis shoes or running shoes will not cut it, especially on Lookout Mountain. The trail is very rocky and stony. I have some other hikes where the footing is softer, but I would still recommend using boots overall. Please visit the "Pages" section of this Meetup Group and read Kaveh's "What to expect on a hike". There is a link within that will take you to REI "how to pick a good shoe". Good luck!

    Hello Fellow Hikers!

Yesterday Kaveh updated the “Code of Conduct” Page in P2BH and Trail Mix. Although I have not witnessed any violations on my hikes, I do expect all of my hikers to take a few minutes and read through the revised guidelines. If you are a new member to P2BH or Trail Mix, it might be a good idea to absorb all of the PAGES since there is a wealth of information and many of your initial questions about hiking will be answered. Kaveh has provided a great resource library here for all of us, so please take advantage of it.

To get there, simply click on “Pages” on the selection bar of this Meetup Group, and then scroll down to the Table of Contents. Enjoy reading, and I’ll see you on the trails soon! There might be a quiz, so be sharp! Thank you.
