Evening hike to Stoney Mountain North

  • This location is no longer available

  • This hike is rated EASY, however it is more strenuous than the Lonnie Loop.  Come out for an evening hike from the North Mountain Visitor Center to Stoney Mountain North. There is some climbing so be prepared for some exertion. We'll take the #100 trail eastward under 7th St (thru the tunnel and the "enchanted forest") into the preserve  and loop around before coming back. You're encouraged to bring snacks, cameras, and must bring at least 1+ liter of water per person and sturdy hiking footwear. You should also bring a flashlight and/or a headlamp because it will be dark for the entire hike.

I am going to cancel the hike for tonight. I have been watching the weather radar and it looks like the main storm will hit later this evening. Several small cells are developing around the area indicating the atmosphere is very unstable. Stay home and have some chicken noodle soup like I am doing! I hope to see you all next week on the Lonnie Loop hike.

I just looked at the weather report for Thursday evening. Rain is predicted, according to Weather Bug there is a 92% chance of rain beginning at 6:00pm. Hiking in the rain, in the desert, can be dangerous and no one needs to get sick. Therefore, Thursday around 3:00pm I will post an update with a go / no-go on the hike.

I was prepared to hike in my poncho, but I wouldn't be thrilled to go sliding down a muddy hill! Let's hope that the rain holds off... I would really like to enjoy the hike and it should be a "Happy Time".

Will appreciate the 3:00 p.m. update tomorrow!

Lonnie, I spoke to the Ranger last Friday and was told they definitely close the gate at 5:30, although sometimes they run a little late. I think we should all try to arrive a little early, plus we can ask the Ranger to hold off until we're all in before they lock the entrance gate. They are usually willing to work with us.

Thanks, I will arrive early; provided it doesn't rain.

I am totally re-vivified after last night’s hike with Jean! My legs and feet feel fabulous… so I hope that I can make it to the Visitor Center before the gate closes!

Are we meeting at the Visitor Center where we usually meet on day hikes, will we be able to park there at night?

Yes, that is the plan. I did this hike a couple weeks ago and the entrance gate didn't close until 6:30-7:00 hence the reason for the 6:00 starting time (the exit gate stays open).
