Help the elderly and disabled glean citrus from their trees, and help United Food Bank provide nutritious food to people in need.
This is a fun, family-friendly project (minimum age 9) with United Food Bank, serving the greater East Valley and Eastern Arizona, as a member of the Association of Arizona Food Banks, and a Feeding America affiliate.
Volunteers will pick fruit from this resident's 7 citrus trees using gleaning poles with baskets, then collect the citrus in buckets, and carry and empty the buckets into large bins. There is no tree/ladder-climbing necessary, or allowed.
Kids 9 and older, in the presence of a guardian, can hand pick low-hanging fruit, and collect fruit that has fallen to the ground during the gleaning process.
For protection against scratches from branches and thorns, please bring gloves, if you have them, and wear long-sleeved shirts, full-length pants, closed-toed shoes, and clothes you don't mind getting dirty or snagged. Hats and sunglasses or safety goggles are recommended for protection from dust and debris particles.
