Our August selection is the newest work of Neil Shubin called The Universe Within: Discovering the Common History of Rocks, Planets, and People. It's a Sagan-esque tour of our cosmic evolution from particles to planets to people. Shubin tackles the question "Where do we come from?" in the largest possible sense.

    From Amazon:

In Your Inner Fish, Neil Shubin delved into the amazing connections between human bodies—our hands, heads, and jaws—and the structures in fish and worms that lived hundreds of millions of years ago.In The Universe Within, with his trademark clarity and exuberance, Shubin takes an even more expansive approach to the question of why we look the way we do. Starting once again with fossils, he turns his gaze skyward, showing us how the entirety of the universe’s fourteen-billion-year history can be seen in our bodies. As he moves from our very molecular composition (a result of stellar events at the origin of our solar system) through the workings of our eyes, Shubin makes clear how the evolution of the cosmos has profoundly marked our own bodies.

The book is available in paper, Kindle, and Audible formats.

As always, feel free to BYO beer, wine, snacks, etc. Space is limited to RSVP "Yes" soon if you're interested and change your response if your plans change. Thanks!

    ----------

A skeptic is one who prefers beliefs and conclusions that are reliable and valid to ones that are comforting or convenient, and therefore rigorously and openly applies the methods of science and reason to all empirical claims, especially their own. A skeptic provisionally proportions acceptance of any claim to valid logic and a fair and thorough assessment of available evidence, and studies the pitfalls of human reason and the mechanisms of deception so as to avoid being deceived by others or themselves. Skepticism values method over any particular conclusion. - Dr. Steven Novella
