10:23 Homeopathy Challenge

  • Feb 5, 2011 · 10:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

Skeptics, This year Phoenix Skeptics in the Pub is joining the 10:23 campaign against homeopathy, along with the James Randi Educational Foundation (JREF), The Merseyside Skeptics Society, and other skeptical organizations around the world. The slogan is: "Homeopathy - There's Nothing In It". The event is on Saturday, February 5th at 10:23 am. Basically, we are going to spread the word about this quackery by "overdosing" on homeopathy "remedies."

Details:

Bring your own "remedy" or buy some there (after carefully selecting ones that don't have active ingredients--they're unregulated after all!).

I am contacting the local TV news with a press release, so hopefully one or more will cover the event.

Public parking is across University to the north.

We will be "overdosing" on the sidewalk--not on CVS property. We have to be careful not to break any laws, and I'm certainly no legal expert. We also don't want to make this about CVS being the bad guy; they are just selling what people are buying. Our job is to make it know that this stuff is garbage so that people will choose scientific medicine instead.

After the "overdose" we should reward our hard work properly with a drink, Skeptics in the Pub style!

See you at the sidewalk in front of a drug store and then a pub!

- Matt

I have posted higher res images from the 10:23 Challenge, including some that didn't go on Meetup.com. These are in a PicasaWeb album (link below) allowing you to download your own full-size copies using Google's free Picasa software.
If you post these images on another site, or use them for any other publicity or promotion, please use "robertwesterman.com" as the photo credit. Thanks, and enjoy!

If you like the pictures as-is (including the copyright imprint at the bottom) just right-click on the image. You can download a copy of the picture ("Save Image As") or copy the image link to enter on your Facebook wall ("Copy Image Location"). Let me know if you have any problems.
If you want copies of the pics without the copyright imprint, I will be setting up a set for Matt to potentially use for press and promotion. I will post the link here.

Great photos! Any chance I could upload a couple to my Facebook?

And here's a little skeptical cross-pollination: I talked about our group and the event at a facebook skeptical community I am associated with, SkeptConnect.

For your viewing pleasure...there are now pictures in the Photos tab. Also, I did a little write-up of it on my blog: http://westermanphoto.blogspot.com/2011/02/1023-campaign-homeopathy-goes-down.html

How's that for shameless self promotion? At least the captions are kinda cute....

Was just wondering if we made the news - share whatever you can, it would be great to pass it along. Thanks for setting it up, Matt!

It's a start! I've got lots of ideas for more activism projects. Thanks for putting this together Matt!

We made the evening news on CBS 5 and ABC 15! I'll post links if I can. Great job everyone!

It wasn't as nauseating as I had feared... and I waited and waited, but noboidy died or even swooned! Maybe nobody really took the cures, but just palmed 'em like Tony Barnhart!

Thanks to all the Phoenix-area skeptics who made it out to the 10:23 homeopathy demonstration. Hopefully we'll make the news and reach even more people with our message: there's nothing in it!

I picked up some 30C belladona, arsenic and ipecac at Whole Foods last night. Where there any active ingredients, the first two would do an excellent job of killing someone. The third is rather self-limiting, as ipecac is a powerful emetic. You'd puke it up before it could kill you.

But since there's nothing in the homeopathic "remedies" at this dilution level, we're quite safe.

    See you in an hour!

Added a link to this to Plancast and the wall post Jeff made on the Facebooks. Late in the game, but maybe we can get a few more folks!

And drop by Whole Foods before you go. They have boatloads of homeopathic stuff. I'm going for anything over 30C! (10^-60 from the mother tincture).

    Matt,
Having trouble finding stuff as well. Will there be enough to go around? I don't want to mooch, but I don't want to miss out, either. :\

    February 4, 2011

  • Matt L.

Kenton - Yes, too late. The press release went out Monday. Either way we are specifically calling on pharmacy/drug stores that sell this crap right next to real medicine to notify customers that there's nothing in them. At the same time, we are informing those same customers ourselves by handing out literature and "overdosing" on the non-medicines.

    Jeff -
Yes I had a similar experience at the CVS by my house. I asked for homeopathic remedies and I got blank stares. I found a bunch though. Cold, flu, cough, sleep; pills and liquids. I'm bringing a bunch of stuff.

  • Kenton

Just a (perhaps too-late-to-implement) thought: Maybe it would be better to meet where they actually promulgate homeopathic magic. Do health food stores have lots of those "cures?" Maybe Hi Health, or similar, would be a better target. There is a risk of ridicule if the press calls attention to this potentially hollow gesture.

We finally found Hylands sleeping pills way down on the bottom shelf. Pharmacist didn't even know about them. They have one left. Still may want to buy some before you arrive.

I am currently at the CVS where we're doing this and don't see any homeopathic stuff other than the flu product - oscillococcinum. Should we do this outside a place that actually sells more of it? Or is it hidden here somewhere?

Worst case if you want to take the sleeping pills you will need to buy them elsewhere before tomorrow.

What is everyone else planning on "overdosing" on?

I'm not sure if this is updating correctly, so here is the address again:

    CVS Pharmacy (sidewalk)
    802 S. Mill Ave (Mill & University)

Everyone read up on the 10:23 site so we are all on the same page. We all know the idea, but we want to present a concise, consistent, factual message, and the 10:23 has a great three part discussion. Enjoy!

Robert - We will have leaflets with info and will be doing the "overdose" demo at 10:23 sharp. I don't want to set anything up for fear of breaking the law--no tables or chairs. Signs or posters would be cool. I will try to whip something up (anyone is welcome to make his/her own). As for a location, I spotted a great spot. See the meetup details for info. Pics are also great--thanks for your energy and help!

About the venue question...are you looking for somewhere really public, like outdoors near a shopping center? Or can we do like usual and go to a bar? I may need a beer-opathic chaser.

    January 30, 2011

  • Robert W.

Are we going to have posters, demos, or such, showing the basic math and chemistry that proves these dilutions result in literally nothing but water?

    January 30, 2011

  • Robert W.

Leaflets, shmeaflets. Just like at the pub, we are there to DRINK. If I go down, it will be as a martyr to skepticism. Be sure the news knows that I didn't get sick from the homeopathic ingredients, but from toxic contaminants in their product.

    January 30, 2011

  • Matt L.

I'm not worried about the "OD". I plan on carefully examining the ingredients before doing the stunt. I saw Randi do it in his 70s. If he survived, I think I can too.

However, this is not mandatory. You can make your own super-diluted "remedy" or simply drink water.

I saw a post on Skepchick where some groups are holding off on the "overdose" because since this homeopathy crap isn't regulated in the US you really can't be sure what is in it. You won't get any benefit, of course, but you may get something else you don't want. In Atlanta they are just handing out the leaflets.

    Thoughts?

The plan is to get together shortly before 10:23 to hand out leaflets. On the dot we all "overdose" on homeopathic "remedies". We feel are safe because we check what's in them to confirm that, indeed, there's nothing in them!

We will notify local media ahead of time. If enough of us come out to protest this pseudoscience we may get some attention. Thanks to the JREF and Grassroots Skeptics for the guidance and support!
