The Elements of Photography: Understanding and Creating Sophisticated Images
Author: Angela Faris Belt ‒ Publisher: Focal Press

The Elements of Photography: Understanding and Creating Sophisticated Images by Angela Faris Belt is an interesting textbook on the craft of photography. Ms. Belt goes in depth on the subjects of exposure, composition and technique as they relate to the four elements of photography: the photographic frame; aperture, focus and depth of field; shutter speed, time & motion; and the physical media of the aggregate image. A fine art photographer and educator, Belt draws on her experience and knowledge in what she presents to the reader.

The subject matter of this book is presented in several logical chapters, with exercises at the end of most chapters. Scattered throughout are sidebars with topics for discussion (useful in a classroom and/or workshop environment). Additionally, several artists’ portfolios are presented to illustrate the subject being explained.

Beyond the fundamentals and techniques of making a photograph, Ms. Belt also discusses subjects such as the Artist Statement. Something every exhibiting photographer will need during the course of their career.

Seeing as this is a textbook geared toward the subject of fine art photography, it is not a book for everyone. If you are a new or casual photographer, looking for a quick start guide on what to do after turning your camera on, then this isn’t the book for you. The author assumes the reader has a good working knowledge of their camera, its controls, as well as the basics of photography. If you are a student of photography, or a more advanced photographer looking to really dig in to the subjects presented, then you may want to consider this text for your library.

This book would also be useful for educators. If you are a photography teacher or workshop leader, consider incorporating this text as part of your curriculum (or as a teaching aid). The exercises and discussion topics alone are worthwhile.

Well written, well presented and illustrated, The Elements of Photography: Understanding and Creating Sophisticated Images is a great book for the serious or aspiring fine art photographer.
