This was probably the best Fireworks Show I have seen. We were too far away to hear the music, but we were up on a roof so we had an amazing view of everything. If you like fireworks, San Francisco New Years Eve is coming up soon. Here are a few cool suggestions for places to watch: http://www.sfnewyears.com/san-f...

It would be great if only ONE best shot is posted from each member then we all can comment like a photo contest.

Though I didn't really get to "meet up" with anyone here, the comments posted throughout the day were helpful! I did get to China Beach from where the view was pretty great. I posted one image to the photo set for the meetup; others are here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/mc...

Fort Mason is a good place. One of my favorites is Torpedo Wharf by the warming hut. I am sure alot of photographers have taken the spots along Torpedo Wharf

Amanda... I personally use ISO 200 and f/11

    May 27, 2012

  • Aaron M.

Amanda, ISO somewhere between[masked] would be fine. I'd use the sharpest spot in your lens, somewhere around f/9. The fireworks will be bright enough to light up any scene - shutter time and ISO will depend on bridge exposure... If the bridge is dark, increase either. You should be in manual mode with shutter set to bulb. Start exposing when the firework is going up and end the shutter when you don't want the photo to show any more of it. Leave shutter for multiple fireworks if you want but the

Is Fort Mason one of the best places to shoot? Also, this is my first time to shoot fireworks. I have a Nikon D90 with the[masked]mm lens. I plan to shoot at Manual with ISO of 200, F14-20 at 5-7 sec shots with remote and tripod/gorillapod of course. Do you think that would be a good plan? Does anyone have recommendations to share? I know i'll only have 20 minutes.

On the Marin side they have Conzalman road closed at the bottom. They're leaving the tunnel back way in though to create a one way route. So far no clouds or fog! Parking is pretty much full but people are coming and going.

Just to let you all know at Civic Center there are shuttles to and from Crissy Field. :)

Sounds great me and Dana will be there!! Sounds awesome!! Thanks
more info about meeting spots would be great! Thx!

Take public transport.....Fireworks will be launched from barges underneath the GG bridge. The spots to shoot are from Crissy Field down to Fort Mason. "No public parking will be available in the Presidio, Crissy Field, or Marina Green. Help make this celebration memorable and safe. Don’t drive! Thank you for your support." http://goldengatebridge75.org/c...

this is my first time using meet-up, but I'm already here, in front of the warming hut next to torpedo wharf, watching people set up and such...FYI, I parked in the neighborhood, it appears that there is no parking close to crissy field.

Ratna, Lands End area will be a perfect vantage point, albeit a bit far. It is another iconic view of the GG Bridge. I would without a doubt suggest bringing a telephoto lens.

    May 26, 2012

  • Ratna

Does anybody know if you'll be able to see the fireworks from the area around the Legion of Honor/Lands End?

    May 26, 2012

  • Steven C.

I think it's fair to say that the severe parking restrictions in all the obvious places nullify any strategy that will permit 232 people (or even 20 people) to "assemble". I'm dropping out with my own "preferred" location in mind. Thanks, Andreas, however, for keeping us informed. It's been a great help.

I'm aiming for Fort Point or the Marin Headlands - I think it'll all depend on where I'm able to park!

I will be there in the afternoon. So, where are each of the groups going to meet?

Is anyone going to the Marin Headlands?

    May 24, 2012

  • Andreas

One last comment from me before the event -- if you're not a local, come early and plan ahead with parking, maybe biking the rest of the way. Parking in the Marin Headlands also is extremely limited.

If you need to practice shooting a firework, the A's are having a firework on Friday after their game. No admission needed when you shoot from a distance.

GGNRA is urging EVERYONE to take public transportation.... http://goldengatebridge75.org/c...

Be prepared to get home VERY LATE... I went to the 50th and got home to the East Bay at 3 a.m.

  • Andreas

Heads up: Golden Gate Bridge will close completely, even to traffic, during the 18-minute fireworks show for its 75th anniversary on 5/27

They're going to be set off from barges around the bridge, just like when it opened. Otherwise they'd have no reason to stop traffic.

    May 16, 2012

  • Stuart N.

Yes. The G12 has manual settings so you can control the shutter speed to get good light trails and be able to change the aperture to control the brightness. It is important to steady the camera for long exposures, so you will want to use a tripod. 5x zoom limits you a bit, so you want to be fairly close.

    May 16, 2012

  • Maria

This might be a stupid question, but will I be able to shoot the fireworks well with the Canon G12?

    May 15, 2012

  • Andreas

For all locations along Conzelman Road, be [b]VERY CAREFUL not to park in the bike lane[/b]. Or any other unapproved location. Judging by the amount of CHP & Park Rangers out there during the "Super Moon", they made a killing in handing out citations.

Update on the firework -- QUOTE : Starting time for the fireworks is 9:30 pm. Best viewing spots will be from Fort Point to east Marina Green. Fireworks will be launched from the Bridge. ENDQUOTE
I'm surprised by that, given the strict security etc. But very pleased. That should make this a very unique opportunity.

@persephone -- my suggestion is you search through groups on flickr or other websites. There are tons of tips. Choosing a lens is only a small part of a successful fireworks shot

I emailed [masked] and the response indicated that the best place to watch the fireworks will be on Crissy Field. Hope this helps.

Persephone, the last time I shot fireworks I used an "all purpose" zoom-[masked]mm. It was a nice lens to have. I shot some wide and got the foreground and firework burst, and other shots I zoomed in and got just the burst.
I've since sold that lens and don't have an "all purpose" zoom anymore so I will take two cameras. One with a short zoom 17-35 and one with an[masked]mm mounted. That should cover it. ")

    April 24, 2012

  • Andreas

Still no word on WHERE the firework will be launched -- does anyone know more about this ?
