Fire Photography Posed Practice Session

Greetings Photographers! Last year I co-created a workshop to help photographers and fire dancing artists learn how to create quality captures of fire dancing, including understanding how to capture more of the geometric shapes.

The workshop consisted of a lecture portion followed by a live action practice session. During the practice session, artists posed for the photographers.
While the Fire jam is a great place to practice, we'd like to offer you a special opportunity to shoot with a select group of experienced artists who will pose for your cameras.

For those who want to understand where we're coming from and get on the same page, you can start by purchasing the Get Lit: Fire Dancing Photography Basics lecture and presentation slides from Temple of Poi at http://wp.me/p2hXoY-3C

For those already in the know, feel free to just stop by and join us. This will be a structured photo shoot and we will have specific meet up points, backdrops and just a handful of artists.

Sunset will be at 8:22. We will meet at 8:00 pm at the fountain and use the palace of fine arts as a backdrop until dark. When the sky darkens fully, we will move under the dome (at 8:55) and then do a second shoot under the dome from 8:55 - 9:25.

at 9:30, a different group of people will arrive and we will have a show dress rehearsal. PHotographers are welcome to attend this third portion as well, though it will be using live action techniques rather than posed techniques.

This will be a trade and we will gain access to the photos for non commercial purposes and will let you use them for non money making purposes as well.

Please note, since we want to use these photos for our web site, we ask that photographers stay out of the frame to ensure quality composition within the photos.

We will only do this if enough photographers think they will gain value from this experience.

The Fire Dancers are so skilled and helpful, and with such a great location it is hard to take a bad shot (although I seem to be able to:) They truly leave me with a smile on my face.

thanks so much for coming everyone!!! looking forward to seeing all your awesome photos. Please, i'd love feedback on how we can do these and make them better. For example, was it helpful to use the "Get Lit" workshop material? Were the images we gave you helpful in creating the pictures? Please let us know so we can continue to create more and more awesome art together! ;)

i highly recommend you print and bring the cheat sheet with you if you want to try to capture the geometry. most of the time what we see in pictures is too long an exposure so there isn't a clear path or too short an exposure. for most of these poses, i suggest you start with a 2-2.5 second exposure time. ideally, there would be a flash at the end as well, but that may be hard with 80 people. :)

holy moly! 80 of you attending. whoo hoo!!! i just decided that in order to help you get a sense of what we will be trying to capture, we're going to draw out what the geometry would look like for each pose so you know what to shoot for. (ha, pun intended!)

we are doing this both for our benefit and we'd like to do it for the photographer's benefit. So I want to make a PDF and post it somewhere for you to get. please check back here for a link tomorrow so you can print it out to bring. :

Also, photographers, it really is great when you do subtle watermarks on a corner or on the edge. That way we are sure to credit you when we use the photo. It is really hard to keep track of who took which photo without the watermarks. At the same time, the watermarks that are too invasive (across the center of the photo) make the photo unusable for promotional purposes. :)
