Virtual Photo Challenge - Alphabet Soup

Join us for the next virtual challenge: Alphabet Soup. If you want to play, make sure you're signed up before the start time of 7am on Wednesday, March 6th.

As with the last challenge (Juxtapose), if you RSVP to attend this event, you are making a personal commitment to take at least ONE photo according to your choice and interpretation of the themes provided, and post at least ONE image in the Designated Album for this challenge.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
INSTRUCTIONS
You must sign up before the start date to take part in this challenge.
By signing up you commit to take at least ONE photo representing your choice of the items on the list. You may take as many photos as you like, but you must post at least ONE image to the designated photo album for the challenge.
ALPHABET SOUP
This week's theme, Alphabet Soup, requires you to create your own theme(s) for one or more of the 5 items on the list. To determine your theme, simply add your choice of letters in between the first and last letters to arrive at a word to use as your custom theme. Here are your items:
1. A is for A......e
2. B is for B......n
3. Q is for Q......y
4. T is for T......s
5. W is for W......d
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

HOW IT WORKS

To participate, you must sign up before the start date of this challenge.

Your own personal challenge starts when you RSVP to join us on the challenge. You commit to taking at least ONE photo, based on your interpretation of the one of the themes in the list.

You must post at least ONE image to the Designated Photo Album for this Challenge, and you MUST use the Caption to name the theme that each image represents. You can post up to 5 images, one for each of the themes.

No other photos are allowed. Your photos must be taken with your camera between the start and end dates of this challenge. If you cannot post your images on the day you took them, you can post later; there is no time limit for posting your images to the Album once the challenge begins.

Use of all of your cameras are welcome, such as SLR, phone, toy, and point & shoots. Computer post-processing techniques (crop, colour correction, etc.) are allowed. To make it more challenging, we encourage use of "in-camera" settings and framing and minimal computer post-processing.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
All group members are encouraged to enjoy the photos that are posted by the participants of this challenge and add comments of encouragement and appreciation.
REMEMBER: we will NOT meet in person because this is a VIRTUAL challenge. There will be no judging and no prizes. If you sign up for the challenge, you are making a personal agreement with yourself to take photos and then post your best photos as laid out in the instructions.
Note: If you miss the start date and cannot RSVP, then you must wait for the next challenge... :)
Enjoy!!!!
    I think this was my favourite challenge yet.....although i do miss the search for obscure colours...
      Glad you enjoyed it Kelly. Maybe another SEEK challenge soon? With a cool colour option of course.
    I enjoyed the both the freedom AND the challenge of Alphabet Soup - I agree with Kelly that it was very difficult to choose only five images...I had many 'also rans'. Enjoyed the words and photos chosen by the rest of the group.
      Whoops, hit the wrong button, as I started to say, you really are: Mary-but not Mary-Ann or Mary-Jane, Mary Jo, or Mary Lee, etc, Doug but not Douglas or even Dougie and although you drop Wright, it's also not Right or Right-O. Righty-Ho, got it!!! Hi Mary-Doug!!! Hope you don't mind the kidding around. It's just this challenge has been such fun in all ways.
      March 10, 2013
    Hi Trisha,
    That was a great challenge! I can't wait to see what you have planned for the next one....thanks for doing this.....
    1 · March 9, 2013
  • Wendy
    Just before the challenge begins, I wanted to add, mostly our challenges involve subject words. With this challenge, the words we use can be verbs, adjectives, adverbs as well. More obscure words like: able, wild, quickly, thuds. Hope that is helpful for anyone stuck trying to just pick nouns. Looking forward to this next challenge as everyone is adding so much before it even begins with all these comments.
    1 · March 5, 2013
    • Russ K.
      Terrific observation, Wendy! I'd like to add the idea that nouns are the low-hanging easy fruit. For added challenge, try verbs - and for extra credit, try adverbs.
    Okay...I have my lists of words ready...I have no idea what i am looking for.... I'm just going to wander around with my camera and see what i come across.....I really like this challenge (so far).....it is feeling somewhat like a scavenger hunt......oh yes and I think the word QWERTY should be disallowed ):
    1 · March 4, 2013
    • Russ K.
      I kinda like QWERTY as a word. I'd love to see a representation of QWERTY that is NOT the obvious one.
    Hi Haven't done a virtual challenge for awhile , should be fun. Am I right , I can take different pictures of one of the themes But I only pick one theme?
    March 5, 2013
    • Trish
      Hi Elfi! You can take as many photos as you like of one or more of the themes. Of course, for this (Alphabet Soup) challenge, you are choosing a word to represent your own theme - one word for each of the five clues provided - and only post one image per theme, up to 5 images in total. Don't forget to name your theme in the Caption when you upload your image(s) to the designated Album! Ok? :)
    I am new to the group. I have a question in regards to this challange. Does it mean the word must start with this letter "A" and end with "e"?
    1. A is for A......e
    March 2, 2013
    • Bob
      Hi Wendy, I think my spelling ability must have improved if I notice that twine does not end with "s", but it does show I read your comments to the end. Ha! Ha!
    • Wendy
      Monday morning laugh, huh? Are you finding the pre-challenge week dialogue exchanges are getting to be as much fun as the challenge and photo comments? We'll have to keep this up for each challenge.
    Yes!!!!
    Alphabet soup: is there a set length to the word? Why can't photos be from this year; I was at a farm last Sunday and have shots from that???? The word must start and end with the given letters?
    Thanks for anybodies help. Terry
    March 1, 2013
    • Wendy
      Your photos from this year can be posted in the section for each month outside of the challenge. Yes, the words begin with the letter, like the first one: A, and end with E. The length of the word is up to you. And photos taken within the week posted by Trish. Them's the rules. ::))
    On Twitter, just read a great quote which applies to our Photo Challenges. "Photography is an art of observation. It's about finding something interesting in an ordinary place." Elliott Erwitt
    From @GreatArtQuotes on Twitter.
    4 · February 28, 2013
  • Wendy
    I agree, every two weeks is much better. It means if one wishes to arrange to photograph at a particular place and arrangements need to be made, it's not such a rush from one challenge to another. It's wonderful the creative leeway with next week's challenge. Keep them coming, Trish, just every 2 weeks now!!!
    The possibilities are infinite . . . what a challenge!
    February 27, 2013
    I'm able to walk now so away I go. I am excited to see what ideas other members choose. I've enjoyed seeing the photographs from the last virtual meetup. I hope I can add something interesting.
    i like this every 2 weeks rather than every week
    1 · February 28, 2013
    • Trish
      It sort of makes sense, doesn't it? Let's see how it goes. Maybe weekly was a bit aggressive last year and a rhythm of every 2 weeks might be just what we need going forward! :)
    2 · February 24, 2013
    • Trish
      Hi Wendy, I'm happy everyone is getting so much from the challenges (before and during!). The "show" idea has been bounced around in the last year and after speaking to quite a few people who create/participate/host shows, it seems it takes 6 months of planning and a small army of volunteers, plus money. I'm not prepared to do that right now but I encourage everyone to go for it at existing exhibitions such as at VPW's PhotoHaus Gallery: http://photohausgalle..., and the annual 12x12 PhotoMarathon: http://vancouverphoto...
      February 25, 2013
    • Trish
      BTW, quite a few people who are members of this group have shown their work at PhotoHaus Gallery :)
      February 25, 2013
  • kelly
    i've found lots of ideas looking up acceptable words for scrabble...
    1 · February 24, 2013
  • Bob
    This looks like quite an interesting challenge, it seems we we can make up our own topics.
    1 · February 24, 2013
    • Wendy
      And if one were to use French instead of English, even more words become available!
      1 · February 24, 2013
    • Trish
      Well, I did think about that - but I see no reason to limit the words to English... so be as creative as you like. Maybe if you're going to be creative and use other languages it might be nice to provide some context or translation in your image Caption. :)
